Welcome to DuN mon-eye.
I have a 750SS (for which I have plans) and some people say it is a sweeter motor than the 900. No particular vices as far as I am aware (but there will be plenty of advice following very shortly:) ) so usual points to check as with any bike but service history is all important. Get as much info on this as you can. Chances of being main dealer serviced at that age are very slim but that is not really a problem. You need to find out when/who did the servicing and pay attention to when belts were last done. Tales of "only 500 miles since they were done" are meaningless if they were done 5 years ago. If bike is due a main service you will be in region of £300 to £500 depending what needs to be done and where you go.
Always easy to let heart rule the head with a Duke but remember there are plenty out there, some bad some good but peeps on here will point you in right direction if you ask nicely....and ply them with alcohol!:)

Nice bike for a first Ducati Mon-eye. Things to check for are;
Cracks in the top frame rails at either side of the steering head.
Cracks in the swinging arm at the pivot spindle clamp.
Dents in the wheel rims, especially the front if it has been run with 120/60 section tyres.
Voltage regulators are known to fail.
At that mileage the needle jets will have worn oval and the fueling at smallish throttle openings will be affected.
Cracked frames and swinging arms are usually replaced FOC (apart from labour) by Ducati

Hi there, I was only in Durham yesterday on my way up to Westgate rd - but am only in Stockton, so not a million miles away.

Derek beat me to the nasties to look for, otherwise all I can add is try to check for a tired battery; easily worn own out when neglected.

For independant servicing - Ducati John in Leeds is a top bloke:

Good luck - Frank

It is quite possible that if you test ride it you will not like riding it as a Ducati is quite different from an IL4 unless you have had Honda v twins. You will need to use the gears more and make sure you are in the right gear as it won't be happy if you open it up at 30 in 3rd or 4th gear. The more you ride it the better the riding experience gets :)

i dont mind v twins, i just found i used to try an rev them to much but i'll get used to that after a while riding 1

i have a 1992 750ss what a fantasic bike mine pulls from 20mph in 5th gear hates rain ices up when its cold but thats all part of the fun of a ducati.
i do about 500 miles a week i love it and hate it but mainly love it

well i've done insurance quotes an its a winner once i've checked the bike over again on saturday.

quotes all TPFT
My Honda CBR600 1998 £342.49
Suzuki GSXR600 1998 £732.84
Ducati 750ss £241.37

woohoo

Only just read this thread - Welcome Mon-eye.

I agree with all of the above plus the fact that at that mileage I would check with the vendor (if you can) whether the valve guides have been replaced. The 750 engine, of which I have had dealings (and ownings) is a very sweet little engine - much nicer than the 900 in some ways but if it's been revved hard from cold (like lots of them were) it will have worn the guides out quite early.
It's not a major job but if it hasn't been done it will drink oil and smoke etc. check for this. :)

But judging by the pics it looks a sweet little bike that will be a great fun toy and can still embarrass alot of larger more powerful stuff.

Have you tried wickedguotes.com for insurance ? Just got covered on TL 1000S much cheaper than anywhere else and all done on the net.:)

Hello M-E, I got a 750ss ie 2001 registered since Jan 2006 and I did about 9000 miles.

I never had a problem, I only had to do the ordinary maintenance.

I'm very happy with it and I can agree with what everybody else is saying.

What I could add is that is not a hugely powerful bike but very good fun to ride (although not particularly comfortable especially over long trips).

I hope that other look today went well, enjoyed the test ride and decided to get it.

well the bike was fine to ride, was different to what i was expecting though but liked it. the only thing was it had been warmed up before i got there and i would of liked to see it start from cold. its had the belts done 9 months ago buy MnS at newcastle so thats good too (got receits).im just sorting out all the finance for it now then sorted.cant wait.

i've just got a CB1 too and im not sure weather to keep this as a work bike to keep the duke nice ?
