Me, MartinH and Scotty managed to get out today , I met Martin at Kirkby Stephen where we found a rather strange pigeon/parrot :scratchhead: , headed off to Barnard Castle, met Scotty then up to Hartside in the :rain: and sleet, roads were slippy, muddy and still covered in salt but it was good to be back out. Took us a while to leave Hartside, the cafe had the log fire burning and it was tempting just to sit there all day :tea: , check out the 2 happy bikers about to head home. Martin still had 100 miles to get back home at this point :eek:

He's right. Kirkby Stephen Market Square, mid February, icy, sleety and cold there's a parrot, cockatoo, Galah whatever weirdo bird wandering round the car park, surreal.

It is true - there're two blokes in Kirkby Stephen who breed / rescue macaw parrots as well as other birds. One of the blokes was a tenant of the last association I used to work for - kept them in his kitchen and on his balcony - saw them with me own eyes up close. I had to investigate complaints - birds aren't usually allowed in flats - but I couldn't fault the cleanliness of the place, all the cages were scrubbed out using the correct disinfectant twice a day.:D
 
Michael you were true to your word! I said I wanted to see the parrot when I got home and here it is. I think it was last year or the year before I was there and 2 of the Yellow and blue ones were circling the square making a load of noise yet no one paid any attention to them. Quite strange really. Just got in freezing cold. Had good run back though, as soon as I started to descend the a6 after Shap it got brighter and warmer and my hands actually warmed up as I was riding. Course it then went dark coming back from Kirby Lonsdale and I got numb fingers again. Great comment from girlfriend on my return 'biking season started then? out before breakfast then home when its gone dark!' Good day out though.
 
hartside on saturday

gizmo, i got up to hartside on saturday, temperature gauge was between 7 and 5 degrees all 100miles of the run
there were on 4 bikes there including ours and yeah the open fire was a great help (along with Pie, peas chips and gravy)
Arent the roads a mess though, i nearly ended up in the river when you cross that single track bridge - deep band of loose gravel right in the middle of it.
still thats the first run out of 06 - now to clean the bike

oh yeah, the SBK which rarely gets used in winter has an outside air temp gauge but the multi, all year, all round bike doesn't , italian logic :)

roads were messy, i was over Kirkstone Saturday and there was ice and slush around combined with salt and mud, nice, took me hours to clean and i need more Scottoiler 365 as i used the last :(
