MoT Time

I tried to do a poll, but that has disappeared!

Anyway it passed with an advisory on the state of the front brake disks, and it was four years ago when they were last done, they said. So I've said to do it! I must be fecking hard on the brakes, as these disks only lasted about 20,000 miles! I would think that 50,000 should be more normal - and I don't brake that much, but do automatics get through brake discs quicker than manuals? Anyone know?

They are ripping you off, my automatic only needs front pads and discs every 100k miles 🤔😁

I replaced mine a few weeks ago with about 94k miles on - second set on from new, and my car is notoriously heavy on brakes. 20,000 miles doesn't sound a lot.

I have an automatic BMW 6 series (a fuckin' big heavy lump) and I had the discs replaced at 78k.

Mind you Perry, there are discs and there are discs, so the quality can greatly affect durability. 4 new discs and pads cost me around a grand (with vat) at an Indy BMW place.

My van did 80k on the fronts and 50k on the rears

Unless you ride the brake pedal, it reeks bullshit mate

Advisory only.

When I collect the car, I will ask what's going on. The car has done about 47k miles in total and has been through the originals plus the last set they fitted four years ago. Now way can I be riding the brakes as it is fecking awkward for me to get off the accelerator and on to the brake pedal. My knackered left leg says well out of the way. That is why I like having an automatic. At most, it has been through one set of pads since the discs were fitted, so that means that I am getting about a two to one ratio on pads to disc wearing out.

The only ting that I notice is that being an automatic, there is no engine braking unless I still the gearbox into the powershift mode, where I control what gear it is in. What I will try doing is using the automatic mode less, so I can utilise engine braking more. But this should be effecting pad wear more than disc wear.

Ask to see the old pads and discs and for them to explain why they recommended changing them

I've looked back and the Jaguar dealership recommended changing the brakes 2 years ago. No mention on subsequent MOTs (at an independent testing centre) and the pads warning light came on a couple of months back so I replaced the discs and pads.

Now the rear pads light has come on so I'd do them in the next couple of weeks.

Parts were £178 for the fronts and the rears will be £120. Jaguar charged £800+ last time for all round and that was 4 or 5 years ago.

Has the garage quantified how worn the discs are?

I've tended to get another year after independent MOT advisory before changing pads. I don't change discs unless they are really scabby :ROFLMAO:

Around £9k for front discs and pads on the Aston last time I looked, but not too worried as the pads are original and they reckon normally 3 sets of pads to set of discs. Carbon ceramic which stop you at a phenomenal rate if necessary and virtually zero brake dust to make a mess if the wheels but there's a price to be paid further down the line.

Do you reckon the stopping power is greater? I thought the benefit of carbon was they don't fade through repeated hard use.

Might be wise to put a warning on your post for Larry before he reads that...

£572 odd for service, MoT, and new front brake disks. They showed me an old one and it was knacked. It was an aftermarket job that they use, but they think that they are as good as genuine Ford. They thought as it is an an auto with zero engine braking might be a clue. I will try using the powershift mode button more coz you can change down to get some engine braking.

All in all, it is what it is, I really like the car - it has lots of power and is reliable. The sliding rear doors are the game changer. I would not want to be without them. So, I want to keep the car for as long as possible. Compared to taxis, that I had to use once, it just rocks, Like when I collected the car, I drove it down to the Sharpness viewing point on a lovely evening. No planning, no phone calls, and I just went on impulse.

Have you had the sat-nav serviced ?

Google Maps is obsessed with the Cotswold Way. When I go to Bath, I go to the Lansdown Park & Ride, as the council hate you taking cars into Bath. The Park & Ride is fine, though, with regular buses taking me right into the centre, by the theatre, and it is as cheap as chips. Obviously, I now know the way to the P & R really well, but there is a shortcut - that isn't really a shortcut - and when I started using my phone with Google Maps, the answer before it directs you to take this shortcut, that isn't really a shortcut, is an obsession is to get you onto The Cotswold Fecking Way to herd some cows! To get to Bath - whether to drive in, or to the P & R car park, Google Maps Navigation is a total waste of time and above is the sort of track that it will try to get you on! An A-road, like the A46, that is really good, but according to Google, it is shit! Me and the A46 just get on just fine. It is a brilliant road, whether by motorbike or car!

Premium Brembo set will cost under £400 with vat, so 600 labour seems reasonable
