Daft question, when i shorted the solenoid i didnt get any sparking. Is that right?

Not usually no. If you get a screwdriver and lay the metal shaft of it across the 2 terminals you normally get an abundance of sparks
Thats what I thought. Thats got me confused! I ordered a new solenoid this morning for 30quid. If that saves me the pain of having to drain the fluids and take the case off (and much huffing and cussing) then happy days. If not I have a spare for the St2/St4/748 just in caseNot usually no. oh cock badger. Changed the solenoid, no go. Changed the battery, no go. Hit the starter a number of times, still nothing. It just "clicks" when I thumb the starter. All earths are good, all voltages are good. Please tell me there is something else to check before I turn to the starter motor removal and replacement 
If it clicks it's getting power but not enough, last resort try using jump leads to feed the starter, if they don't work then it 'could' be the starter motor itselfoh cock badger. What's missing?
I'm missing a relay. God knows where that's gone. Probably on a Welsh road some where. Will that solve the issue? Only one way to find out, best go get one.
That's the fan relay it seams. Best check the others just in case
Fan relay shouldn't be any issue, except for overheating, you are getting power to the starter so not a relay issue, relay is on or off
OK, dad had an excellent idea. I connected the new starter motor to the solenoid and earthed it. And bingo it worked. Starter motor it is!
