TomTom GPS

There may well be GPS threads, but I couldn't find them.

I bought this TomTom 550, but before fitting to my KTM I wanted to test it. I did and found it to be shit. There is a fundamental problem in that I can design routes (roughly) in the TomTom web page, on my browser, but there is no definitive way of downloading the routes to the device when it is connect ed via USB and the Tomtom cable.

I've given up.

But I found a way go get gpx files out of Google Maps (my preferred software for navigation) and the KTM route finder is supposed to be able to read them in. That will mean that I can design routes in Google Maps, as I do now, create a gpx file of the route and then send it to my phone via Google drive. So, I am gonna shell out and buy the KTM software. The guy in Fowlers reckoned that it was shit and it may well be. If I can design my routes in Google Maps on my PC, save them as a gpx, and then download that GPX to the KTM app, all should be good. The instructions should come up on the dash and so I don't need to worry about clamping the TomTom to anything. It is flipping heavy, so I wasn't going to use it anyway. I was going to get a Garmin 390LM as it is a bit smaller and not built like a brick shithouse.

That's the plan . . . .

The original need was for something to work in Poland. My phone will, but there may be data roaming charges. Anyway, Poland is a problem for another day. At the moment, a fifty mile trip to AMS Motorcycles defeats the TomTom" It only wants to go to AMSterdam!

I've just checked the TomTom MyDrive program and it's a doddle to download as a GPX file if you want to.

Save your route. Then click 'Share Route' and download as a GPX.

Mr Idiot reporting:

I had the TomTom connected to my PC via a USB cable. I thought that was enough to get routes downloaded to the device. I was wrong.

I retired to bed and took it with me, so no USB connection, just WiFi. It went on about shit on the PC application, about signing on with the device. I did not know what the F it was talking about as you never ever get a sign-on prompt when you turn on the device. I discovered that hidden away (for it is a secret) there is somewhere to sign on. I did and there were the routes. So it is all about WiFi and nothing to do with attaching the device to the computer via USB. That is so last century!

I still won't fit it to the bike as I don't really like, or trust it, yet, but it might prove useful if I ride to Poland. I'll keep playing. And when I can't plan routes on a PC, I will have to see if it believes that I am not a 40 ton truck, or riding a horse! Designed by motorcyclists for motorcyclists - what a lot of shit!

I will shell out for the KTM system, as that requires nothing to be fitted and my phone already connects to it via Bluetooth. The only way that I could get it to stop pestering was to connect with Bluetooth and share my phonebook, for that essential need to make phone calls whilst I am riding along!

Yes, I noticed this! Seems a bit bizarre that it is easy, and TomTom's policy is to make nothing easy! It is easier than downloading the route to your device. Who manages their software development? That person is a stupid fool!

The trouble is ( and why Google is better) they know nothing of places. I have planned out a trip to that brewery in Somerset, via the helicopter museum in Weston-Super-Mare (that looks interesting) and TomTom knows nothing of these places, whereas Google does and just makes life easy (that is very against the policies of TomTom!)
