Canberra Bomber in RAAF Amberley base hanger 1955.

This dramatic photograph of a Canberra bomber of 2 Squadron “flying” through the hanger at Amberley RAAF base was the result of boredom.

A group of airmen serving their National Service there set the aircraft on stands under the wings and retracted the undercarriage, then one of them lay on the ground huddled in “terror”.

Later, in the darkroom, the stands were erased to leave this image.

a Vincati (all Ducati 750 SS/Vincent 1000cc engine)--

In fact, the first Vincati was reported by the Australian Motorcycle Action in October 1975, and it was put together by Max Johnson.

In 1972, Johnson was looking for a Vincent but found a Vincent engine installed in a racing car. He acquired it and started his quest for frame parts, which was nearly an impossible mission in the early seventies.

The idea of the Vincati came as he was assisting a friend in repairing his Ducati 750. He assessed that the Vincent Twin would fit quite well in this chassis and that it would be much easier to find a wrecked bike on the market.

After about three years of intensive work (he was a bit quicker than Exi) including the mock-up, rebuilding the engine, and finally assembling the bike, the Vincati was ready and made its first appearance during one of the VOC outings.

Phil Irving, co-designer of the Vincent, was there and made the following comment ‘It almost looks as if it grew there.’ reported the AMA, which also commented that ‘Phil Irving was not partial to the many variations and hybrids of the traditional Vincent, so these faint words of praise indicate he was not unpleased with the Max Johnson version

Subaru flat 12

The 1235 was a racing engine designed and built by Motori Moderni for Subaru's Formula One program in 1990.

The power output was less than that of the V8s and V10 F1 rivals however, it did give one advantage over the others. It had a very low center of gravity which could provide some aero and handling benefits.

The engine mad up to 559hp which was 40-100bhp less than the other 2.

The engine made its début at the 1990 United States Grand Prix but it was not a happy one.

Gachot finished dead-last in pre-qualifying, unable to complete a single lap before a gear-linkage failure.
