First car I drove

I can't say it was my first car because it was something my dad bought off a customer for about £200, for me and my older sister to learn to drive in.

We lived over a mile from a public road so we could drive it properly up and down the gears, not just pootling around. I must've been about 12 and loved it.

It's also the first car I crashed - wheels locked up in the wet and it went straight on into an outbuilding - the roof kinked up about a foot in the middle. It could've been much worse - I'd just got out of my (eldest) sister's almost new Fiat X19 which I'd been playing in while all the family were out. That obviously had better tyres and brakes.

My old man's 1980 MK3 escort 1.1 popular in a supermarket car park at 16. He bought that car to teach me and my 2 brothers to drive. It lasted until at least 1986 if not 87, clutch replaced, CV joints replaced front end smash in the ice by my old man and untold levels of abuse by 3 teenage boys 🤔 fekkin good motor that - did 60 in 2nd 😂

MK1 Escort that lasted 12 hours.

Turned out an older teenager had a row with his dad, put a card in a newsagents window (old stylee advertising) to sell a car which I bought the next day, only for the dad to contact me and say the son had sold his dads pride and joy without the dad knowing. I got my money back but that house must have have been a hoot to live in.

Did you have a little mark up on the purchase price?

My dads Mk4 Cortina when I was 15 - Mam & Dad had gone on holiday without us for the first time so I ragged it around the block, nearly crashed and put it back in the garage 👀
First I drove legally was my mams 1.8 Marina TC as a learner then bought an old V8 SD1 Rover as my first car for £1200. Wrecked the gearbox on the Rover doing burnouts so went back to driving the TC for a few days until I wrote it off

one identical to this - my dad let me drive it round a cotton mill yard near our house - I'd be 15

04-plate Nissan Almera Tino.

A really marvellous machine.

You say that...we had one a a family run about until the family numbered more than the seatbelts in it.

It was totally devoid of anything approaching character, fun or engagement - but it cost next to nothing to run and did what it was meant to. Weidly I've got fond memories of it - probably because it cost so little at a time I didn't have much. It was a pale turquoise colour

One like this.

Before I passed my test it dropped a valve (broken stem), which then turned upside down and hammered itself into the piston like a nail. I bought a new short motor and head, transferred all thee gubbins on the road outside the house. Three years later I had a head on with a lorry and that was the end of that.

My Nan taught me to drive in a Viva van, the old man gave it to me to drive around the land. I would have been about 12.
Eventually I snapped a leaf spring pretending to be The Sweeney and that was the end of that.
I then upgraded to a Triumph Herald…

Are you ok , I’m worried maybe you should see a doctor or at least an optician
If you get any more symptoms , like having thoughts of owning certain bi mota’s then seek psychiatric help immediately

How anyone could relate that to the Forums most aesthetically pleasing and by far the coolest motorcycle was beyond me, until I noticed who had made such a silly 🤪 comment - all was clear when I remembered your old Avtar picture of yersen':)(y)

Landrover Series One LWB, aged 3, Mums got a photo of me driving standing on the seat steering, I had to sit down on the floor and put both feet on the clutch to change gears. Growing up on a large farm I drove all sorts, cars, tractors, trucks and bulldozers. Started riding motorbikes at 3 as well, my brothers wee Honda Z50A, had to fall over to stop as I couldn't reach the ground.

I'm particularly tsken by the wing mirrors, were they cleverly designed to ensure things looked further away than they actually were and therefore avoiding the telling looks of other road users 🤣
JDM spec they were all car mainly for the Japanese market but in the late 80s they made their way to Ireland second hand with very low mileage as they anti smog laws hit in Japan... strangely brexit has started the market again

First car i drove was me mum's viva . Can't remember the year of the car but it was 1983 and the car was ancient compared to all the neighbors..
Me and me older bro would nic it when she was at work. We didn't go far, just up and down our street. We got rumbled when I hit the grass bank on out driveway and couldn't get it tidied up before mum got home.
Next car I drove was a hilman hunter that I bought at 15. Didn't get my learners license till 18 as I was a lazy Guinness.. didn't get my full license till 28!!!!

Couple of days after my 16th birthday, I put my dad's 2 week old VW Passat Estate on it's roof one night, about 3 miles from home (that's another story).

When I got out through the window, I tried lifting it back onto it's wheels, my mind thinking the roof must be scrathed...maybe they'll buff out. Reality hit me about 3 seconds after that.
