VW and Mercedes Electric vans

I've been watching the new series of fifth gear which is called fifth gear recharged and on quest tv. This week they compared the Mercedes e vito panel van vs the VW ABT e-transporter. They say that engineers worked out that most van journeys in a day are no more than around 62 miles?? and that explains why the range is so short and why they have limited the vans top speed.

They quoted the mercedes van as a 86 mile range and a restricted 50mph top speed and the vw van as a 82 miles range with a top speed restricted to 56mph

The other point made on both was that unlike their car cousins, there was no instant torque from standstill but more of a put your foot to the floor and wait a few seconds

Anyway if it is of interest in a real world test and you can get Quest catch up, the fifth gear recharged and it was shown this week.

You need at least 3 or 4 vans for each Diesel van you replace....
I'll find the post I did before and report it here.

I was seriously looking at the ABT Transporter, up until I found out about the shit range. Although there is an extended range version.
I work mainly at Stansted airport, a 200+ mile journey from Manchester.

That was the end of the electric road for me, back to looking for a diesel powered van now !

I’ve had an eSprinter since early January. Knew about the poor range, but reasoned that with my normal day to day useage, it would be fine. So far, so good…
Noobie is right about the gathering of pace, rapid it is not. As for driving on a daily basis it’s no problem at all.
One piece of advice to anyone considering an EV - get your own charging point. Most of the ‘public’ offerings (as shown on the App maps) turned out to be either broken, in car parks with height restrictions, (okay, so no problem unless your van is over 8’ high, ahem) or belonged to a car dealer - who did not want to share.

Fuck electric …. Absolute horse shite I will be driving 400+ miles tomorrow… I did 400+ miles on Wednesday I did 110 miles yesterday…. Electric is totally not fit for purpose and it doesn’t make an engine/turbo noise the day I lose engine feel and braking and smell etc etc I get on the bus with @Char

As if vans aren't already a target for tea leaves - add a £100 charging cable and make it run out of juice in the middle of nowhere - good work :ROFLMAO:

I’m a changed man since I drove the electric Fiat 500, I get no enjoyment out of driving and it was so easy and effortless to drive.
For someone driving to and from a place of work daily I can see the appeal.
No worse than any other car I’ve driven, but I have no interest whatsoever in cars.
Electric motorbikes, now they are shite!

I kind of get it having a hybrid, but you can't beat blipping the loud pedal at the lights in a powerful RWD motor and feeling the whole car trying to turn with the torque 😁

I understand that but for the majority of people a car is just a means of going from A to B as easily and efficiently as possible.
How long is the average journey daily for most people?
My last place of work was a 50 mile round trip, easily done in an electric car.
As I said, I’m not into cars at all so my point of view would be different to yourself.
Your generation needs to embrace the future like us kids have…..

Update on Lithium batteries in Vans.

I work for a local body shop that makes specialised vans / lorries for the airport and associated industries.

A recent "shock" has been received by one user as his all electric vans are now £3000 each to insure compared to the Diesel Sprinter (circa £400 each).
So not only does he have the initial +£52,000 to lay out (normally circa £35K), he needs at least three times the vans, as they can only run for 4 hours before a recharge and the weight carried is 775Kg instead of 1800Kg. As you can imagine he's not a happy bunny. He has had the insurance issue fully investigated.
"if the air bags deploy in an accident this indicates that the lithium battery has also been shocked by the impact. The vehicle will require a completely new battery pack and as such this would render the vehicle a write off". Note many of these vehicles may have had £15K of modifications.

It would be reasonable to assume that this may also apply to other battery vehicles..... perhaps a step backwards in renewable tech?
