Today after slopping on some eggshell on the skirting boards to keep the wife happy, I rolled out the Ducati and headed off to Dunsop Bridge for a leisurely ride on a sunny day, as I was enjoying the quiet roads a dumb pheasant decided to shoot out from the hedge, glancing blow to the visor, no damage just a greasy smear, dont know who got the biggest shock

makes you think

Bloody pheasants

well documeted one came oot the hedge and knocked me off the bike last year, 4 ribs, 4 transverse process and shoulder smashed, punctured lung and internal bleeding still fooked now 18m on....

Oh No ! Thats not good, pretty bad injuries !

There was a guy on a big BMW traily knocked off over Quernmore on his way to Devils Bridge a couple of years ago, broke his neck and he was found in a ditch the next day, that was a Pheasant.

I hope your recovery is soon

Sounds like you were very lucky.

You're right when you say it makes you think - knowing what Bruce went through and the number of birds my 998 scares out of hedges.

Very lucky mate, glad your ok considering what Bruce went through......

I had an incident he one and only time I went out on the road on my bike with a video camera.
Overtook a lorry on the Bathgate-Falkirk and felt/heard a 'thump' just as I got ahead of it. Got home and gave the bike a quick visual once over, nothing seemed wrong. Got in the house to reviewed the footage in slow motion. It just catches a bird flying out of the hedge and disappearing in front of my bike.
Went back out to the garage to find what was left of a bird (luckily not a pheasant but still no idea what it was) in bits splattered all over/in the radiator.
Was picking bits out with tweezers for days, and the smell when the bike warmed up was..well...you can imagine.....

Looking Back....

I am sure that the "TERMI'S" on the monster "gliffed" the bird that hit me, still think that a quiet bike would not have moved that bird.....having said that the sound is to die for!!!! (almost)....I seem to have a problem with animals as I ran over a badger last night on the way down from Coldstream what a whack, no damage to the old X trail but Mr badger was fooked....
I think I will use the push bike future!

Had a few close shaves over the years so when I moved over here I was quite glad that pheasants aren't a part of Norsk fauna - or weren't. Some @@@@wit hunters decided they should be so I got a bit of a shock the other day when a pheasant zipped low level over the road i front of me. Looks like they like the Norsk climate anyway.

Nearly got my head taken off by a golden eagle while riding through Sweden a few years ago. Don't want to see one THAT close ever again.

These things do my head in! they seem to deliberately aim for bikers! although Crows are just as bad, I set off for Austria last year and 20 mins into the journey a Crow decided to head butt me at 70mph, just polished my helmet as well!

Standards of medical care

You know what really p@ssed me off about my incident was when I was taken to Wansbeck General Hospital by helicopter they were saying that it was all my fault cos I ride a bike....rubbish attitude and when after 2/3 days they kicked me out having not addressed the shoulder or lung situation....only when the ex (Ann) got me admitted to Cumberland infirmary that they sorted the lung out with a drain (2.5 lts of pluric gunge later) they were also amazed that no one was bothered about my shoulder...those who can recall me showing off my deformed shoulder at the "Bob Mac" in 2010 twas like a freak show, collar bone up at a ridiculous angle and so sore....eventually got that sorted via Borders General in Melrose, but Wansbeck were rubbish...
Rant over....why is it such a hospital lottery???

"pluric gunge" that alone would keep me 100 miles from that particular part of Northumberland just incase !

I think in your case Bruce, a Rant is well deserved
