Ebay FS Ducati's best ever single?

Went on holiday couple of years ago and ended up in Plymouth New Hampshire (where pilgrim fathers landed etc) and went out for an Italian meal that night and ended up in a discussion with the owner/chef who not only had an SPS the same year as my own but went on tour with the Ducati factory team in the 90's when these bikes were raced. He wasn't paid as such but spent a few years rubbing shoulders with everyone who was anyone in racing at the time. He reckoned the handling etc on these bikes is out of this world. I'd pay £40k for this LONG before I paid the same for a Sedici. Absolutely no hesitation! I would be amazed if this is not snapped up at the buy it now especially with the exchange rate.

it must be me, and maybe I am alone with thjis, but it doesnt appeal at all.

looks like a load of bits from other bikes have been thrown on it - seat and fairing dont match in style or shape, zorst way off the mark.

each to thier own...but £40k!!!

I personally don't like it much either. Back in the mid-nineties it might have been OK but now it looks too much like a bitza.
Fairing, wheels and swinging arm from a 900ssie, tank from a 916, frame from an 851/88 with the rear subframe lopped off and replaced with a carbon fibre one, front forks from any R version SBK, engine from a 900ss with the rear cylinder lopped off! The only unique bit is the seat which doesn't look that great anyway.

it was one of Terblanche's first major project and what you see is the influences he used in later models like the 916 and revised SuperSport. it is indeed a bitza, he utilised what was around him to create it, . Side on it doesn't look as good, 3/4 is the best angle

You can or could get a bodykit to convert a Supersport to the Supermono look

There's a Dutch site with a series of images of what i think is a replica with more 916 bits in

I just wish they'd do a modern version of it, 550cc, 75 bhp, 125 kg sounds good to me.

I know it's a pet subject of mine but I agree 100%!......Take an existing motor and lop off a cyclinder and stick in a balance shaft and you are away. Take a 1098 motor and lop off a cylinder and you have ......wow.... coincidence, 550cc!:D It would appeal to a different market than the L twin diehards but I reckon there would be enough others that would buy it to make it feasible.

Even though I detest that South African bloke, it was one of Ducatis best ever looking a interesting bikes. They sounded amazing - my mate Geoff (Baines) used to race one and hearing a single rev so high was just amazing.
Of cause it is easy to criticise it and say it was a bitsa - of cause it was, it was a pure racing motorcycle, but it's engine was a very clever piece of design; finding a solution to a thumping great single piston over 100mm in diameter reving at 10500 rpm!
I love it - and I had dealings with this brilliant and tiny motorcycle too while at Carstens.....

whats so special about them ????

Only 67 made in total and were not offered for sale to the public. All were destined for racing. Parts used were best of the best in building them. This was the bike which led directly to the 916 and the styling is obvious when you look at it. Ducati planned to put it into production and for whatever reason never did. 10 years after they made them people still ask why not. never come up for sale now and if you read the "history" of this bike it actually came from the Ducati museum and was an "error" when it was sold. The 73/74 750 Supersport to many Ducatisti is the holy grail but for some the Supermono outshines it in desirability. I'll have one of each please!:D

Michael, my pic says pending approval - what does this mean?

its because the thread is in for sale, all attachments are moderated in for sale, i'll move the thread.....

I know a guy at work who recently sold a 999 lump he'd somehow ended up with who was planning on building a 999 based super mono..

Think JHP have built a supermono out of a 999 lump though

I'd love one just for what it is, John's looks great I might try and blag a ride sometime :D

Although seeing a young Ed perched on one has somehow dulled my enthusiasm :p
