Ducati Leeds - 1098 Demo Ride - Thanks!

The thoughts of Joe Public.

OK went out today and had the full monty 1098 test ride, got about 100 miles in all told.

Went out Sunday afternoon for a quick warm up, not having ridden for nearly three months and put the miles in on my favourite roads, the A6108 to Masham, Leyburn, then the A684 to Hawes. It felt good to be out there in the sun and although the Monster was going to be radically different to the 1098 it got the old juices flowing again and ensured I was ready to tackle corners, speed, braking etc. once more.

Arrived at Ducati Leeds Monday morning to see the bike sat there looking pretty and poised – more than can be said for me, I felt distinctly apprehensive. On my last “demo” bike rides (at Cadwell DOC track day) I had a decent session with the 999 but promptly stuffed the 749 into the straw bales after two laps! Sorry Derek, forgot to mention that! Still, these things happen, don’t they? Don’t they?

A request for the pillion seat was granted, got to give my lad a trip out for a while at least, but then no footpegs to be found and apparently it takes a while to install them. My fault, should have called ahead. Little fuel in tank but then the local gas station is not far away. Great – an hour and a half or so, he said. OK, off to get gas, call in back home, show the beast off, then go for a blast. Except everywhere there seemed to be road works, why is it always the same when you want to get a move on?

First impressions – the bike felt cramped, especially compared to the Monster (not been on the 996 since September). The brakes are VERY strong – couldn’t use a full grip, even two fingers lead to a really sharp, instant feel, so resorted to the old mountain bike technique of one finger braking and managed proper modulation thereafter. The monobloc construction and radial mounts DO work well. I reckon more people will bin it on the brakes than will by opening the throttle. Speaking of which, as you might expect, throttle response was instantaneous. The mirrors can be made to work, if by means of pulling the elbows in, but for some reason those on the test bike seemed to wander downwards all by themselves, as if the mount needed tightening – no big problem, I hope. It felt quite short and needed a proper move of the head to be able to see the clocks – the digital readout for speed therefore was difficult to keep a close eye on. Be careful!

Riding – awesome on all counts. Braking, standing starts, wheelies, roll on acceleration in any gear, turn in, power out, stability, roadholding, full lean to full lean in combination corners, no weaknesses noticed anywhere. I have to admit I WANTED to like it, but was equally prepared to accept flaws – fuel tank range, harsh suspension, cramped and ungainly riding position amongst others – which might mean I didn’t after all, want to buy one. Fat chance.

Within two miles of leaving Harrogate on the A61 North I got into my stride and the bike felt alive, eager, ready to perform – asking what I could do for it, with it, about it! I had been very steady for the short ride from DL to home. Now I was in my playground and the 1098 was in it’s element. Awesome doesn’t begin to describe the experience. It’s no wonder Bike run the 440 Test Route up here, the two roads are ideal for finding out what a bike can do when you ask it. Before long the riding position felt ideal, just like the old well worn feel of the 996, but the bike was youthful, eager, more powerful with tauter suspension (but not uncomfortable) and wanted riding properly. I did it as best as I could.

Corners came and went, straights evaporated, crests and dips added to the fun, gaps in traffic could be found anywhere, the mid-range acceleration is solid and reassuring. Stop in an instant? No problem. Turn on a sixpence? Easy. Get round the next bend? Don’t even ask.

Take some photographs, turn around, do it all again on the way back, it was over all too soon. Met a guy at the chippy as I was stood, catching my breath, gawping at the beauty of the thing, and he asked the questions – Is it yours? How does it go? How much? He rides a Mille apparently – I tried to persuade him to at least go to Ducati Leeds and book a test ride. I reckon he might.

Still not convinced? Ask Charlie or Derek for the keys, get out for an hour – then say you don’t want one!

Nice review, sounds like some machine, I would love a test ride but it would be pointless I could never afford one, I will have to stick to the 916, but if my fortunes change I would probably buy one just on that review alone.

Nice one Pete - Called in at DL for bits for my multi this afternoon - the 1098 was cowering in a corner - it said you were'nt bad either!!!!!

Hi All

This bike is awesome, especially on the open road. I had it for a test ride a little while ago and on the openroad it was mega.. I'm glad mine is on order and due end of April/ early May. What to do with the 998s ?? (me thinks). there are a few drawbacks but Dukes are always that way..

The brakes are 1 fingers anymore and you'll be on the floor ( thanks to DL/ Derek and all the gang). However the drawbacks are the pirelli's they ain't that good and the brake levers were a little short. but despite some drawbacks and others it reminded me of the 749, just with the 1100 grunt to help you out of trouble..

It'll be a fun ride when the Tricolore arrives.. Just make sure she has Michelin Pilot Powers on. These are ace tyres...

Glad you saw the fun parts RJ....

Enjoy it when it comes... Its gonna be fun ... YEEE HAAA....

Nice

Nice review Pedro...

When are you buying one then? Are you sure we're all entered in the Mountain Myhem? ;)

Samie the Pirellis are a fantastic tyre, can't see anything wrong with them at all. I rate them as the best tyre I've ever ridden. Each to his own though. If you have to BUY new tyres I'll have the Pirellis off you - at a good discount please. With such powerful brakes you don't need longer levers, you need shorter ones - far too much leverage anyway. Did you know the levers on that bike are not standard - it's an upgrade with the flip-up ends, perhaps that explains your problems with them.

Mac, yes, it was cowering, I thrashed it to within an inch of my life - but don't tell Derek! :D

Nobody at all is entered Doug - I spent all your monies on the deposit for the 1098 :)

Derek, I told you to stock up! Now, about that discount...........:D

B and P, you would have loved it, sorry again. You wouldn't have kept up mind. ;)

Alanswerthat (love that name, brill), yes it does go, get a test ride, you know you want to.

BTW the tank range seems Ok too, never saw the reserve light at all, so that's good news - you CAN tour on it. And on the way back from Leyburn I saw another one coming toward me - only two bikes seen all day and one was a 1098!

crackin write up - just need to get along and get a ride organised now...That's the easy part - I know I want one, it's just the missus keeps on telling me that I don't need one....hmmmmm

funny that, when I took the 1098 to show my lad, the missus had to come outside and have a look too. "Is this it then?" "No it's that one over there" (as I pointed at a random kawasaki tourer parked up)" "Oh she said" Then took a good hard look at that one.

It's because it's red you see, like the 996 - they'll never know.......PMSL. Out of sight, later! :D

Those flip up levers are a gimmick and a half, no point in having them unless you upgrade the clipons to strnger race items, if you throw the thing down the road and flick the lever up you've more than likely at best bent the clip on, worst case you've snapped it off, been there done that at less than 20mph they're not strong items on Ducati's from my experience

Og good write up though Pete :D

RJ

Its down to personal preference and I'm just more comfortable on MPP's than Pirelli's. About discounts I'm not sure we'll have to wait and see what happens. The levers were fine for 1 finger stuff, but not used the short 1's for ages so again its just my preference.

THe bike is awesome though and spending the kind of money we are it has to be.. It put a smile on my face when I borrowed it, so good so far...

Great review Steve, mine is due any day now, just need to sort out my 749R sale now with the dealer !

Does it feel quick even compared to the 996 ?

Pete

A little bird let slip that the deposit is down...

Have you gone for the S that you rode or the stock version?

Doug

You can't trust anyone! Aye deposit paid. TBH I don't need the S stuff, standard is good enough for me. The engine produces the same power and the brakes work just as well!

It feels quick compared to anything! When the original Audi Quattro was launched I always wanted one of them and this grabs me in the same way - it's a "must have" and I don't care what anyone else says - I love it!

rocky horror!

wheelies! it does wheelies does it! you told me you needed the 1098 because you had to take your aged grandmother to the vicars tea party and your car had run out of petrol! anyroad up glad you enjoyed it me old mate. On a serious note I have been asked by Bennetts (the insurance people) if I know anyone who would be interested in participating in a motorcycle orchestra project, the sound of the bikes supplying the music- its all part of a bike aware campaign that Bennetts are running as I get more details I will post them. ps this is NOT a wind up. .

Sounds like a bit of a laugh, let me know when it's happening! That's if I can find my way there. (sorry, see other thread :D )

It was me granny, she insisted.........:)

I thought that you said half of your customers were good at blowing their own trumpets........:D :D :D :D

Crikey! 9.30pm and Charlie's not in the pub!!!! Has Bingley closed down early tonight?:lol2:
Oops! I'll fetch mi P45.!;)

if the Bennetts "Sound of Music" idea is anything to go by he'd had enough, was delusional, and had been sent home early :D :D
