Multistrada Info Required

OK....after having a whale of a time on the 1100ds demo from woods, I am seriously considering getting a Multi, but just require a bit more info from past / present owners please!
As the 1100 hasn't been around for that long, most 2nd hand ones are the 1000ds. As I was unable to test a 1000, is there much difference between the 2 in terms of power or anything else for that matter?
It is basically going to be used 2 up for most of the time and the few people I have spoken to say it's not the best bike for this, mainly because their partners are quite small and struggled to climb aboard....?
Also, is there anyone with experience of the 'S' version...is it worth the difference in money (baring in mind that I want as much adjustment as possible for 2 up riding)?

Thanks in advance,

Padge :)

Havent time at the moment to give a detailed answer but you will find a load of info over on multistrada.net. I am a big fan of Multis so I have not too many bad things to say.

Will reply in more detail later.

I've had DS and S DS 1000 versions and am happy with both. S gives you the Ohlins suspension and a few carbon bits at a good price but i'm not convinced the ohlins is as good as the standard suspension! never ridden an 1100 so can't compare it to that :( main thing on the 1100 would be a wet clutch, the dry clutch is irritating on long journeys. the extra power might be useful as it can struggle fully loaded uphill into head winds.

Its the best pillion bike i've ever owned, it got Linzi back into motorbikes after quite a few years not going pillion. Seats are comfy, big bars so rider is upright, rear seat isn't too far above riders seat, big grab rail and even with panniers on its not too bad for climbing aboard. Linzi is "only" 5'1 and doesn't have a problem but keeps scuffing the panniers :grr: :D

early models have a few issues, low screen, dodgy sidestand, uncomy seats, rectified on 05 on. almost all have problems with the fuel sender, do not believe what it says, fuel off the trip meter. just found out that VOSA consider this a safety issue and can issue a forced recall so it might end up with Ducati having to fix them. Worn rockers was common in the US but doesn't seem so big a problem here.

Add heated grips, scottoiler, panniers and it'll do just about everything.

I have the Multi 1100 and have to say its probably the best bike I have ridden. It won't give you to much top end grunt but in the twisties you will keep up easily with any sportsbike. I also considered going for the "S" version, but was told that apart from the suspension and the rear hugger there is'nt that much of a difference and both models will stick to any task you throw at it, easily.
As far as a pillion is concerned I had a mate on the back who is probably not far of 14st and it made little difference to the handling.
As stated before go to Multistrada.net and you will get all the info you require, otherwise just get what you can afford.

Thank you very much to you all that replied! Pretty much what you said where my thoughts excactly except for the pillion advice on which I had none.
Sharon is about 5'10 (sorry..can't give weight or I'd be shot at dawn)! and felt very comfortable on the back, even though we didn't actually ride anywhere as no lid and it was dark.
I have now made up my mind to get one but unsure as to which model (1100/1100s), I would just prefer that little bit of extra power is required over the 1000 as I have yet to shed my winter coat and doesn't yet look like it is going to budge!.........watch this space! ;)

*update*

Well...Iv'e finally made up my mind and gone for a 1100s brand spanker!
Sharon came out on the back of the demo on sunday and thoroughly enjoyed it :)
So we agreed and put a deposit down there and then. Bike should be ready for the 3rd May as they already had one in stock (no miles / unregistered) in Red!
Can't wait to pick it up, i am like a little kid at christmas all over again! :)
Big thanks to Andy Wood (Woods of Abergele) for letting me have all the time I needed with the Demo and no pressure at all to buy.

Good stuff Kevin.
Just remember the fuel gauge works :comp2: on the 1100, so fill up!

I like the Ohlins suspenders but took about 10mm of preload out of the front and it steers quicker now and feels more planted. I also rotated the bars forward but this buggers up the view (sic) from the mirrors. Fitting FAR mirrors with a fully rotating knuckle joint solves this I believe.

However fitting handguards doesn't help stability or direction changes at high speed and you have to rotate the bars well back to stop them fouling the fixed part of the fairing.
Also if fitting use threadlock to stop the bar end screws & weights falling off ( there's one on Skipton bypass somewhere!)

I think the seat is wierd though. Seems comfy to start with but has you fidgeting within 50 miles (and after 500 miles over the Northern rally weekend last year I couldn't wait to get off). Also quite grippy so hard to move around without semi standing on pegs.
I scored a new 2003 one on ebay for £10 and currently having it worked on.

Hiya Arj and thanks mate.

I was meaning to pm you before I bought just to get some more info as I knew you had one and had done some bits and bobs to it. But after going back in on sunday, just thought B******S! I'm going for it anyway! :)

I had done about 150 miles on the demo and never once felt uncomfortable at all, obviously my fat arse cushions it then ;)
Will probably fit a scottoiler at some point, so I will give you a bell when I get around to it.

Cheers.

well done Padge, you'll not regret it it'll open up a load of routes you'd never consider on an SBK

Great stuff Kev, knew you'd stump for that or the KTM eventually :p

Better get some free weekends so Martin and Michael can give you the back road tour! :D

Cheers fella's! I'm now expecting to be invited to ride every road I've never been on before and some! ;)
I did contemplate geeting the KTM Jon, but just wanted to stick with the MARQUE to be perfectly honest :o
So...I'll see you on a ride soon then....? :)

Multi was on list too, but I didn't fancy the service and repair bills which ultimately was the deciding factor for me.

I have some nice roads for you ;)

Great news, superb bike, I had the privelege of riding both, not a great deal of difference both great, fuel gauge as people have mentioned on the 1,000 but use the digi dash.
It must have termi's or similar, de-cat pipe and open clutch then it is a Ducati which is why I prefer the 1,000.....See you at the Welsh, I take it you will Multistrading ?

Thanks Martyn! Yes. I may well be multistrading to the Merlin...Haven't made up my mind as to which one yet...
When I was looking at buying, the dry clutch versus wet clutch did have me thinking for a while, but then I thought the wet clutch makes slightly more pratical sense for long journeys  I still have the 749s for the Jingly jangly bit though ;)

Let us know what time you are heading off to the Merlin though will ya?

Will do there are four from up here to meet you down there, what time are you setting off, it would be good if we could be with you for about 10.00 am.

Sounds just about right that Martyn. I will have a chat with Steve and put up a definate time to leave and a meeting point. It will probably be from the same place as last year at the esso garage near Whitchurch.

Bit far east is Whitchurch, how about Mold or Ruthin
