To put it in perspective and to offer some facts, the 1098 DOES take longer to get into than a 999 but not be very much.
Instead of 1 minute to get the fairing off, it takes maybe 5 mins!!!
Like Rockjock sez, it's not really a problem to us!!! After a bit of practice our guys were in the groove and whipping em off in jig time!! (oooh err!!)
The trade off is that the fairing (although a similar type of material) through design, feel considerably more substantial. Also the fit and finish of the underside as an example (above the exhausts) and the way it clips together is beautifully done. The rest of the plastics are equally as impressive.
Conversely, under the skin, they are comparible if not easier to work on.
Regarding the tensioner, the factory are very well aware of the situation. Being made of plastic really isn't an issue. Some plastics are literally bulletproof!!! The nature of the plastic means it's ideal for the job, light & strong etc. It really is a very simply fixed & mild teething issue.
The part has already been redesigned and those machines that are coming out from the factory now have been modified. I'm told the vast majority of customers that are waiting on ordered bikes will not be affected as the bikes have not really started coming in in large quantities yet.
So few have actually been delivered thus far so early in the production run, there are not many bikes out there to modify.
Any owners with bikes in the system are going to notified (if they haven't been already) to contact their local dealer to get the issue resolved.
Some of the race teams are already using the updated part in extreme conditions and the new part works a treat - job done!
Again as Rockjock sez it's a simple warranty issue, that's one of the reasons why the warranty is there and so comprehensive.
With proper workshop timing it will only mean a quick pitstop for the customer as it's a job that can be done 'while-U-wait'. The bike will not need to be off the road for any considerable time.
