1098, why ?

When you see ducati's mentioned, the 1098 gets a lot of mentions. The 1199 and the 1299 hardly ever. Is it because the 1098 is a substantially better bike than it's later incarnations or just that latter two were never really big sellers?

get the sales figures up....

Up those numbers the bikes got better and better..and the v4 is better still. Reliability, comfort, performance, electric package..looks
but I bet the sales didn't until the v4.

I think Andy is correct, 1098 has a chocolate gearbox apparently, the 1198 was better. People probably mention that era of bike as the last of the true Ducatis but that's like your dad saying there's never been a better car than the rover p4. I reckon more 1199's and 1299's were sold but more on PCP so regarded as disposable and not kept in living rooms

People don’t call them 1199 or 1299’s, they call them Panigale’s that why you don’t see the numbers mentioned. The V2 Panigale R was the best looking yet btw 😊

I agree with all points above, 1098 some reliability issues, 1198 getting better, Panigale 1199 and 1299 change from belt to chain driven cams, focused bikes but to purist ducatisa sacrilege, and now with the V4 more electronics power and focus and price tag to match!

Not owned by huge corporate Audi, no electrikery riding mode gubbins so in a misty eyed way still bodged together by luigi with bits he found in the store cupboard making it full of character like wot Mike Hailwood and real men would ride
Character is the word I think. Lumpy, uncomfortable, difficult to ride fast but full of character. My 1299 was fairly bland in comparison to my 1098, although the 1299 is a much more refined machine.

Although Ducati pre Lamborghini (Audi) was owned by holding and investment groups, allegedly Ducati always had guidance (interference) from FIAT et al

Ooooo Cool. I've got one of them somewhere. 🤔 Although since removing the wheel stickers I can't seem to find it, as it just blends into the background now. 🤷‍♂️

Because it's a trellis-tastic, raw, true Ducati. 🥰 Nuff said. 🤷‍♂️

And mine's a steroid enhanced bastard.

I think 1098’s are shit.
Ive got one and its shit, a big steaming pile of dogshit fucking shit build quality parts bin pikee of a bike. Just shit shittity shit.
Just an utter Guinnesswagon pile of shit because all the 916 cockwombles started getting sand in their vaginas about single sided swingarms and twin pipes and side by side headlights the benders. Probably pricks like cock piss perrin and all that crowd of self noshing gheys.
As a bike it just pulled its arsehole open and lets everyone have a go, fucking piles of shit.

Naturally l’m on the fence about this one.
But if i could untwatify myself and unpaint my eyeballs all over again I’d go straight to panigale instead of this dogpile of a bike.

What are you trying to say 🤔🤣

Partly because the 999 was the ugliest, poorest sales performing, letterbox exhaust stacked headlight piece of shit ever to crawl out of a designer's bin. Exi will go apoplectic but the sales figures are indisputable.

The 1098 was hailed (in 07) as a return to the design philosophy of the 916-98 together with a lift in performance. Checa winning a WSBK championship aboard a 1098R didn't do any harm either.

The 1199 had a top end oriented powerplant by comparison, different chassis - they were shit and though the 1299 was better it wasn't until the V4 that you had a bike that could compete with the in-line Jap Fours.

So you can draw a parallel between the comparative failure of the 1199/1299 and the grotesque 999.

It’s launch year outsold the 916 ‘s launch year - the sales figures are indisputable 😊👍

It's won more races for Ducati than the 1098 ever did.
Domenicale and reparto corse wanted the proper swingarm back for 999, which is why it didn't get a carry over 916 arm, and then domenicale come 1098 wanted the ssa back.

As a piece of engineering, rather than a stylists wet dream the 999 ranks as an all time great. No ducati before or since has allowed you so much flexibility on frame adjustment. 1098 even got the adjustable headstock removed unless you were prepared to fork out for R money.

As a race bike, the 1098 was better for those down box hill as there were so many carry over components with the road bike it was easier to say what had been changed, rather than what components stayed. 1098 was a cost down exercise pure and simple, and after speaking to people involved in the race bikes that's a fact.

The engine was cracking, but the looks were a bit r1, a bit blade, a bit first year design student.

The accounts department didn't want machined from solid top yokes, or multi adjustable frames, nor did they want unique to the machine powertrain systems, "eh igor, what cans you got on the shelf?" ; "Oh I got these hexagonal sleeves with a carbon end cap, GSXR boys luv a bit of it" ; "fuck it, that'll do, bollocks if we're letting some felt tip fairy prima donna have his way again - fuck fuckity that ".

Even the engine, crying out loud, when an engineer is telling you, that the big bearing that's been rock solid for over two decades is fine, why do you want to make him cheap out for the one with the smaller balls in there.. oh look... the bottom end's shit itself.

It was because all the penis drips expected an evolution of the 916 that they were so pissed off, and in fact that bike exists, because the tamburini evolution was the MV F4.

On the plus side, because there are relatively few around now, it means that our exige sits in a cloud of his own self assured smugness sucking himself off at how much his 999 collection is now worth, whereas the 1098 is a fucking sierra chav wagon by comparison, with your 'cozzy' 1098R boys giving it the full willy wave - that is until they get trumped by an 1198R owner who can play the considerably more rarer than yeaow card.

916 : (in an elitist cockend sneery voice like a protwins or jhp salesman) Ohhh its all iconic and amazing an guggenheim museum - come on everyone lets panic buy them and get all herd of cattle about it, quick quick chase me I've got a 916... Oh yes, iconic, oh yes, foggeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

999: ( in a chuck norris or Mr T voice ) Fuck this shit, reparto corse wants a bike to win races on, and they told us this is how it's got to be.

1098: (in a deadrie barlow voice cos you's all caught the cross dressing ghey) Ohhh give us back a 916, but you know a modern one with more.. moderny bits on them, and normal exhaust cans and a single sided swingarm and side by side headlights and a proper big long tail section like wedge of cheese like a 916 but you know we don't want a 916 but we really do because we all love the 916, infact we've got 916 exhaust fleshlights don'tcha know... mmmmmm...

anyone that doesn't like the 999 has got their eyeballs painted on and prefers to suck the shit out of a cows arse while rubbing a picture of jimmy saville on their bum holes.

So you prefer the 1098R to the 916 family?

So you prefer the 1098R to the 916 family?
I wouldn't go that far.

For all my pistaking, I prefer the 916 family as a package, it's tidier, tighter and just all round better put together, there's a purity in the engineering, it's very lean and has some lovely thought gone into it, such as the airbox design and the way the seat is hinged. Anybody can complicate stuff as you know, it's keeping things simple that's difficult.

The 1098 family just got swollen, and some of the engineering and design ideas on it are just gash, in fact quite japanese in their thinking, and that in itself isn't bad, but in 1098 we start to see the beginning of making something easy for the production line and sub assembly cycle times as a priority before anything else.

The best 1098/1198 I've seen are the ones that @Andyb and @final_edition have built.. in earlier chassis, they just look right.

I remember when the 1098 came out and rose tinted specs off, there was a lot of comment that the design wasn't really new, and stole lots of cues from japanese machines as well regarding the silhouette which arguably the 916 and 999 didn't. the 2007/8 R1 being the one I remember it being likened to. Basically the 1098 looked like it could have been styled in japan at the time.

So, no, I'd say that the 916 family are still a more complete machine visually in an unmistakably Ducati design kind of way.

Admittedly it was no different to the how could they let it happen uproar from the 888 brotherhood when the 916 came out.
Like them or loathe them the 916 and 999 did just that, it caused polar opinions, it was the vision of Terblanche and Tamburini respectively, and the former, having worked under the latter wasn't going to reinvent his wheel.

By comparison the 1098 really just caused a "meh" response, marketing designed that bike, and the accounts department engineered it. I think you could have laid a shit and painted it red as long as it was a single sider, had side by side lamps, twin pipes , and most important of all - not a 999.

I look to things like the supercar world, and I saw the same thing going on. Marketing departments cannot generate "iconic" it has to come because stuf is just right. mclaren F1 being a prime example. The brief for that car was simple, it had to be the best driver centric supercar above all else, and the engine was what it was because the market demanded it. Everything else that catapulted that car to stardom was a byproduct of the fact that within the limitations of what they had tech wise, it was done right and true to it's vision, and so it is with 916 and to an extent 999.

1098 is the marketing department telling styling what the peer groups and customers wanted, and that doesn't necessarily translate into what was actually needed, or what was better or right.

So gen 2 999S or R is what you want for bragging rights/investment or road lunacy, no premium for gen 1 biposto as it had no launch fanfare compared with 916 but would still be a better road bike? 749 similar. 🤔
