Are many 1098R owners actually riding the things, or have they wised up and moved on to the V4. While the R may have been a big deal 20 years ago, I'm assuming the V4 would kick it's ass pretty much everywhere. It seems to me, the only people still talking up the 1098R are the polishers.

I've had a Bayliss 1098R on the road for the last 3 years and likely this year too - you either want one or you don't. Personally I don't like the V4's and prefer my old R1 to a V4.
I also have an ex race 1098R that won a national championship only 5 years ago against R1M's and other modern tackle so they aren't that far out of date
Having the latest & fastest just for bragging rights is a bit silly tbf, always buy what you want for yourself and not for what others think. Are you going racing?
Financially V4's will go down in price where the 1098R's have generally been going up in value which would always be a consideration for me, otherwise I couldn't justify buying 4 1098R's over the last few years.

I rode mine this year, not a lot as I was on the BMW and Elsie and had a bit of a problem with my neck, but this was my 3rd bike on the road (exculding the Vespa)
Next year I'm taking the 1098R out of use and using the Tuono. The year after that, who knows.

I'm not fussed on the new stuff. My mate has a Streetfighter V4 SP, and it's very nice, but I look at old stuff these days, and if I were going to buy something, it would be a classic.
I've never looked at the Panigale V4, not even a hint of it. I can't even see me having one down the line. Strange, because when I bought the Panigale R, that bike 'talked' to me.
I wouldn't buy one. They are at the top of thier price and see no expectation of the price going down but only going up. You can fully understand why anyone who buys certian models and have had good fortune or the knowledge to see an upward trend on thier price but within that group. You will also get people who bought them because they genuinely wanted one so got one and the rise in price is just a welcome benefit.

The money mine has had spent on it is eye watering. I only want a few £k over a standard one, and I have almost all the original bits for the bike too. But people look at the price of new bikes and it looks comparible, so I guess some don't see the value, but I'm not giving it away. I'm not even bothered tbh, but I'd sink the money into an even older classic if it went. As I've said before, it's not even advertised anywhere (only here, if you can call that advertising).
I paid £5k for Elsie a few years ago, some are fetching £10k now. The Desmo has at least doubled over what I paid. I bought what I liked and never think about the price much.

7 on ebay, 5 on autotrader, though probs a few duplicates. Ye've been going on about 1098Rs for a couple of yrs now between this site and Mordor.
There are obviously things about them that keep us owners happy so that we will hang on to them indefinitely. The folk that dont want them
