916 wanted to take groom to the wedding venue

A biking mate of mine, who I've known for over 7 years, is getting married in July this year. He's an experienced biker (15+ years), and currently owns an XJR Yam and an older GSX1100, but he lusts after a proper bike, a Ducati.

His wife-to-be claims "he always talks about Ducatis, and gets excited about the 916".

In February this year she approached me and asked the following question; would I be able to organise for him to arrive at his wedding riding a 916? She's planning this as a surprise, so he's completely unaware.

So I'm asking my fellow Ducatisti; can anyone help?

Here are all the facts:

  • It's in the middle of summer, Saturday 26th July this year.
  • The wedding is to be held at a posh hotel in a little village about 2 miles from Beverley in East Yorkshire.
  • He's due at the 'altar' at 1pm, but I know he wants to be setting off from home around 11:30am.
  • He's insured to ride other bikes.
  • The wedding photographer is a biker, so there'll be some good pictures taken at his house, as well as at the venue
  • The owner of the 916 will certainly be bribed with fuel-money, wedding cake, beer, an invitation to the evening do, copies of the pictures, etc
The nicest part of the discussion started when I asked about having other bikers join in; she's hugely enthusiastic about getting as many bikers together as possible, and is convinced he'd get a major shock with her very thoughtful, planned surprise.

From a personal point of view I'd really like to eventually get to meet some of my fellow Ducatisti, and I'm sure it'll be a good day out for all of us. I'm quite happy to provide my own 750S to the kind 916 owner as his/her alternative transport for the entourage to the wedding venue, and I'm pretty sure there'll be plenty of pillion spaces on offer if they prefer. The journey time from his home to the wedding venue is actually about half an hour. Please note, you'll be with your bike at all times!

After delivering the hapless chap to his doom, err.. altar, there are plenty of nearby venues to ride out to if everyone wants; Squires in Sherburn-in-Elmet is about an hour to the west, Whitby is about an hour to the North, and a good fish 'n chips can be had 20 minutes away in Hornsea.

I look forward to hearing from as many of you as possible, feel free to ask anything I may have forgotten either on this thread or via PM.

Cheers, bambam

What a great idea. I can't help of cause but hope you find someone willing to help. :)

mmm, this is the kind of thing we could really have some fun with.... instead of the bride being "given away", they are led by a trio of Desmosedicis, then the bride and groom in top hat (arai) and tails, and white dress .... on whatever DUCATI they choose.... followed by BRIDESMAIDS on 916/998/999 or whatever, as long as they MATCH....... The bride could come in on the back of a WHITE 1098/898 (Kerrie has one ???) The groom on a black or red 1098, probably BLACK

We would all of cousre wear suits (keeing it VERY SLOW)...... if that didn't make the papers, nothing will......

I'm happy to do the Desmosedici part, other owners include Scotch / Freak / Mike Robbins....

This could be a LOT OF FUN........ and Ed will agree with me here, FREE CAKE, oh man it's a winner :D

This was posted way back in February on some other website. I offered my 1098 to fill the bill and got nothing but the @@@@ ripped out of me. "the guy wants a 916 but I suppose he might be happy with 1098" or words to that effect. "I'll ride it for you if he doesn't want it". "lend me it for the day if he's not bothered" and so on. I was well @@@@ed off with this guys general attitude to be fair, now he's on here with a last ditch effort presumably because he's @@@@ed off other people elsewhere.

to be honest if you're being cynical (not me) but so far down the line, and no positive responses as far as we know, it could smack of a scam.

good post chap, thanks for that, I had no intention of letting ANYONE ride anything that I own anyway. I think we'll take it as a non starter - having re-read the thread, it does appear the guy wants to have the bike himself - yeah, like that will happen - Hire a Harley is what looks like being needed. Still it would have been a hoot.

Hi RockJock, you're right - I posted this exact same thing in February, saying the wedding was in July. My intention was to give any potential lender plenty of time to plan for this. Nothing's changed. The wedding is still planned for July.
Your 'words to that effect' quote is a little unkind - you offered a 1098, another forum user jokingly mocked your offer, and I didn't help by not being clear that the bride only knew her new soon-to-be-hubby was a huge fan of the 916, and not any other Ducati. My badly worded response was to indicate that I personally rate the 1098 as an extraordinary bike, and would rather like to take a spin on it. I also apologised publicly to you because of my wording.

I've had two very kind offers of 916's. Both are from owners some distance away from East Yorkshire (one in London, and one in Norfolk), and so it was suggested that I also post here on DUN, as it's obviously more likely to be frequented by northern 916 owners.

This is definitely no scam - it's genuinely an appeal for a 'safe' loan of a 916 as a gift from a bride to her new husband.

RockJock, once again I apologise for the responses which offended you on the ducatisti board. I sincerely hope I one day get the chance to shake your hand, buy you a drink and honestly tell you that it was never my intention to offend you.

Hi Mad Dash,
I'm sorry that this request is being viewed as something like you're suggesting. Quite simply, a biker friend of mine is getting married and his bride wants to surprise him on the day. Because I ride a Ducati, she's asked me for help because the bike of his dreams is a Ducati too.
I know how you'd feel about loaning something like your bike; I feel exactly the same about my pride and joy! But, it doesn't hurt to ask and it's really just to make someones special day more special.
The intention is to offer the owner of the bike whatever they'd like as a reward, and confirmation of insurance coverage needs to be set up to their satisfaction too.

Hi chap, I never actually suggested anything other than how to make it a massive event... didn't realsie they actually wanted the bike, that's all. No worries though, no harm - but as Duncan Bannatyne say's "I'm out"... or is it "Am OOT".....:D :D Hope it all works out for you.

OK Bam, cheers for that message. Good luck with the quest. PS I know where there is a good (my old one) 996 for sale if he's interested.

RockJock, I'm pretty sure that once he's ridden a Ducati, particularly his dream bike, he'll be wanting to own one.:) After the wedding suprise I'll let him know there's a tasty 996 available. Cheers!

Yeah, it's a big ask, I know. God, I've imagined countless times how I'd feel if I got asked, by a complete stranger, for a ride on my bike. I'd run a mile:eek:
Still, the bride has had a good idea here, and she's obviously determined to make the owner completely satisfied that it'll be safe, insured and always within his sight. I reckon she's worried about him wanting to elope with the 916 to be honest... ;)
As for your suggestions for the wedding entourage, I've passed them on and she's overwhelmed - they're fantastic ideas, thanks!
We've had a few (ducati-owning) folks who've volunteered to be there on the day, and more would be outstanding. The best man mentioned to me today that he has already considered getting the press involved, through a contact, so maybe there'll be a bit of local coverage of it all.
