That title won't make sense as soon as it gets separated from tboooe's thread but oh well, live in th e moment and all.

Anywho's, in 1991 the 851 was unobtainable to me. Not so a bunch of years later. I looked for a while and found one that hadn't been advertised yet but the owner wanted to sell. He had only put about 500 miles on it in ten years of ownership and it was time.

I drove five hours into Canada just to see it, and knew in the first 30 seconds I'd be leaving a deposit. Picked it up a while later, dragged it over the border, and spent about a year whipping it into shape. That first season it came home on a trailer about as often as under it's own power. These days it's pretty reliable.

I was going to leave it all stock, but they just look so much better with high mount Termis, I couldn't resist.

It's also filled in for a couple track days when my track bike hasn't been ready. First ride of the year, 30 year old bike, wet track, what could possibly go wrong?

Oh dear that sounds ominous!
Nah, I was riding in the novice group so really not all that risky. Though I did back off after noticing I was catching people on the wet track (I'm typically one of the slower riders). I wasn't sure if my newfound speed in the wet was skill or stupidity so I thought it best to err on the side of caution. I had to chuckle, guys were worried about ABS and traction control settings. One rider asked me what I thought. I was sitting on the 851 at the time so I asked him "What the f*ck is traction control?" To be fair I think the 851 was just about as old as he was. Also not sure he knows when traction control became a thing.

I did retire the 851 from track use after getting to the point I was backing off to protect the bike. On the last session I rode on it, a guy was following me on an all red STsomething. He crashed going into a turn I had watched him screw up in previous sessions. The session was red flagged so I exited before I saw what happened. Some guy followed me to my pit area and was all concerned. I had no idea why so he explained there was a crash and people thought it was me that went down.

The thing was... I got the feeling his concern wasn't for ME... he seemed more relieved when he saw the bike wasn't damaged!
