A686 Alston/Melmerby proposed reduction to 50MPH!

Ah, the downside to saving the limit is that policing gets increased which is what the villagers wanted. TBH i have no issue with the timing/placement of the mobile cameras on the 686, the spots they put them on open roads are all places where there have been accidents or villages and if you get nicked in a village doing more than 30 its yer own stupid fault anyway :) Timing wise they are targeted at weekends and summer months as the stats quite clearly show thats when the majority of accidents occur. They leave us alone on weekday evenings :)

Its a fair compromise, regular users don't get penalised, the fools who chose to ignore limits (and bikes heading at them thumbs down indicating a camera) on weekends might not see it that way :D

As the government makes cut backs it will be interesting to see if Cumbria Constabulary have enough resources to send staff out to Police this road, especially when the camera van could capture people speeding quite easily.

I agree with you Gizmo about the timing/placement of the camera vans, I don't mind well marked "jam sandwiches" either. I dont like unmarked Police vehicles, in my opinion its verging on entrapment :)

30 years ago hardly anyone went up there, and whilst it is a stunning road for most types of bikes, it does get a bit mad some days nowadays, especially at weekends, I dont think I have been up there this year, last year I went up there week day evenings mostly, but I guess that 90% of readers live too far away to do this.

With the defeat of the proposed speed limit and the on-set of winter it will be interesting to see what happens in spring next year when the main biking season starts up again............?
