Advanced Training

yeah, sadly it won't make you immune or give you a protective shield, I have just discovered that a customer of mine in Aberdeen was taken out by a car towing a caravan that came around a corner on his side. No amount of advanced training (he was IAM) would help on that scenario. There but for the grace of god go most of us !!! And then we discover that getting a bike licence is to get so much harder from October... it's not fair. By all means make tests more COMPREHENSIVE, not harder for harder sake - but make it apply to ALL, bikes, cars, trucks, bus, the car test is a joke. The amount of pi$$ stained trouser drivers out there that have the reaction time of a dead tortoise is UNREAL.

Life is all about probability. What is the probability (or risk) that some nupty will pull out on you at a T junction or there will be diesel on a roundabout next to an industrial estate or a farmer is cutting hedges with a tractor around a blind bend? Highly likely to the last one as there is an EU subsidy, I'm surprised there's any hedges left.

Risks are probability based events which advanced training can help you identify, assess and then reduce, if not eliminate. I am sure that some of the training is along the lines of don't 'use a hairdryer in the bath' or 'dry your poodle in a microwave' stuff.

I found the Bikesafe course useful altho' scary being followed around by a policeman at over 60mph. I would like to do IAM but can't find the enthusiam to do the in and around town stuff. Not my style of riding.

This is actually a useful thread if a bit ermmmm heated at times so here's my five pennyworth:

1) I took the old style test with a bloke and clipboard stood somewhere on the test route, so I never got taught to ride. Had several scary bike accidents but luckily walked away each time (just about in one case  )

2) I'm a lot older, not much wiser, but pain seems to hurt more and I hate damaging my bike.

3) Bikesafe good, and glad I did it but too short to learn a lot.

4) IAM, I tried and tried, found the cornerstones of looking ahead reading the road etc great help, BUT found the 90% wrapped around it too much up its own *rse. And TIME consuming, 3/4 of my whole Saturdays seemed to disappear.

So I've now had a bit of training, as a back to biking type feel I'm safer than I was, but I can't see where to go to get more relevent training. I don't need a badge or a certificate or any sort of anorak, I want to feel I've improved my riding skills relevant to riding on the roads. Can't seem to find it. Thoughts anyone?

tell you what guys, when the nutters and trolls stay off the forum you don't half get some damn good input... and the previous 3-4 posts have been brilliant. Everybody has a view and an opinion, but we're all saying the same thing. Common sense, training, and simply LUCK, all play a factor in riding a bike today. A combination of ALL THREE, well you just MIGHT live a bit longer. I am the first to laugh at the Honda guys, with the dayglo jacket and white helmet - you know, the "kid on koppers". I'll ride safe, and I want to learn more, but then I'll jump on a D16RR at hammer the @rse of it at 170mph... it's what's deemed as "appropriate" :D :D

Anyway, I have a MUCH MORE serious issue, trying to eat a jam doughnut and type, the damn jam has squirted out onto the keyboard - must dash. My keyboard is sticky becuase of JAM, aye right, that might need an explanation :D :D

...Not sure which category of nutter or troll I come in, but for the majority of us, we don't stop learning until the day we die, in every walk of life which includes biking. :)

I would say you come under the category of interesting nutter and cuddly troll and I completely agree with your sentiments on learning.:D  :D

going totally off topic - ED, you're a DUN advertiser... does it work ??? My thinking is there are many self employed Ducati owners who need colour printing for their business, might put an ad in..... PM me if you don't want to upset anyone. Please feel free to return to "Advanced Training", just had to discuss "Advanced Marketing" with Ed.

ooops sorry, couldn't be bothered starting a new thread.

getting the thread back on track... I want to share an advanced riding tip that had me in tears (laughter) last night. Watch out for GRANNIES at Bus Stops... Like me, you probably just said what "WHAT THE FU.....". It is regarded as fact that Grannies can perfect the art of turning up just as the bus is due.... therefore, a granny at a bus stop would indicate an impending BUS on your route.... I did of course dismiss this tip as absolute b0llocks. So, last night, Hyper out for a whirl, heading up through Mount Ellen... granny at a bus stop (I'm now laughing at the comment), 150 yards later, heading into the corner... bus takes the corner wide and nearly swipes me... YOU COULDN'T WRITE THE SCRIPT FOR THAT. I wanted to chase after the bus and punch his face in, but I couldn't move for laughing. :D :D

OH, there is a down side to this... oggling busty blondes at the bus stop is considered normal biker behaviour (male bikers need only apply !!)... looking for grannies, well for road safety you'll just have to live with the stigma.:D

I am quite happy to go past a school at 20mph in the morning or afternoon, you can look for longer and more safely:laugh:

Makes no sense at 2am though:rolleyes:
