Thinking of taking th 748 to Bologna in June on a five day trip. Dunfermline, Newcastle , Amsterdam then to Italy by some route !

Did Germany two years ago on the Pan over a short three day trip and fancy doing something more of challenge. Would be going on my own as best mate cant go for medical reasons.

I am I daft ?

Anyone done it ?

Cheers

We rode back at a much more leisurely pace and it took us 3 days. I reckon you could do it easily. Plan ahead and make sure you know the route you're taking - that's half the battle.:D

Karen's my hero - mad - but still my hero!:D

Me and my mates done Barcelona to Cumbernauld non stop in 2008 and last year i went on my own to San Marino then Pescara further south in Italy .So Pescara to Cumbernauld in one hard shift on a Yamaha fjr1300 with the common faults that fjr's come with.

hey Batman good to see you again :)

def do the trip - it will be great fun. A bunch of us did in to WDW 2007 and did fairly leisurely 3 there and 3 back overnighting on the ferry.

Keep us posted

Continent motorsicklin !

Loads of good routes to choose from.
I would go Hull to Zeebrugge because the route through the Eifel mountains is great past Nurburgring which is the landmark that everyone recognises nowadays. Things brings you out nicely onto the Rhine / Mosel corner at Koblenz when you can then follow the Rhine. This can then take you next to the Black Forest roads and into Switzerland at the Rhinefalls. Through Switzerland and then into Italy at St. Gotthard ( over the pass or thru the tunnell ).

From Amsterdam area it's a bit longer and flatter run to the Rhine but you could head to Munich and to Italy via Austria and the Brenner Pass into Italy at beautiful Lake Garda which does bring you onto the more direct route to Bologna.

Hope this helps !

:o

+2 on the Hull Zeebrugge route, although I'd take sanwiches for your evening meal as the food on board is not alwayd brilliant and it's pricey!

The route which follows the Rhine is good and the tunnel is amazing, especially in a group of Ducatis.:D

Agreed! The sound of 2 x 999's through Swiss tunnels - outstanding!

Thanks Mike. Did the Amsterdam to Koblenz a few years ago on the Pan. Had thought about Hull and might do that instead.

Off to plan a route, thanks for the advice.

Ah ha touring on a 748/916 etc. perfect.

My SPS and 996R did loads of miles round Europe, far better roads than most of Blighty. Even been to the Sahara on a Multistrada.

There's the quick way via motorways but that's a waste of a good bike, go via the Eifel Mountains and the Alps and you'll have a ball.

Or just use the motorway to link up the twisty hilly bits.

If i was going to give you any advice I'd cheat a little and fit heli bars, higher screen and a technosel sponge type seat.

Well I have booked my trip ! Bologna here I come.
Its a quick wizz. Ferry on the 15th June from Newcastle. A Blat to the Ring for some lunch and photos and then to Switzerland for the night. Day one done ! 470 miles !
Day two is through the Alps into Italy via some pass type thing with Twisty bits to arrive in Bologna of Friday night. Beer n Pasta ! 460 miles !
Tried to book into the Ducati Museum and Factory on the Saturday but they haven’t replied to my e-mail yet ! Rest of Saturday spent eating. No miles just miles of Pasta and Beer !
Day four a blat back up towards Germany ?
Day five back to Amsterdam for the Ferry home.
Hope the 748 holds up ! Hope I can fit the Sat Nav !
Any ideas on routes or passes would be most welcome.
Cheers

Glad to see I'm not the only one planning a trip to the factory this year, I'm there 2 weeks after you as i'm heading down for the GP at Mugello.

I've just picked up the panniers for the ST today, good little trial run as it was a 440 Mile round trip to Hamilton and back (many thanks Stevogee you're a gent) . I'm heading over to Normandy first, then Chamonix via Le Mans and Dijon before a the journey into Italy, staying in Bologna for a few days before heading north to take in the Stelvio pass into Austria, Berlin, Nurburgring and finally Amsterdam.

I'm riding solo too as others can't get the time off work, good luck to us both!
