Day Time MOT

I know this one has been done to death on other forums etc, so this is what I know so far.

1. Yep they exist.
2. You don't need to have any lights at all, not even a brake light (as long as you use hand signals)

QUESTIONS
I want to fit a brake light, would this be legal on a day time MOT? and has any one fettled a brake light. I have a race seat with no brake light holes but I think I can rig a LED brake light to a chopped up wiring loom, and fit it into my tail tidy, any one done this?

Not that I plan to ride on the road but once in a while I may nip out.

yes, i can't tell for everyone, but here is what my bike has


horn
no front lights
no indicators
no mirrors
rear led light connected to front and rear brake
standard size numberplate
rear reflector
I also have 54mm titanium termis but the are not stamped 'not for road use' although they are fairly loud

Now I am not certain about the led lights bit, my understanding is you have to have brake lights which is why i have mine, not for the normal lights.

yes, this is how mine is fitted, because the race seat sits a little higher my LED is mounted to top of the underseat tray so it peaks out from under the seat.

Fairly straightforward to connect it to the 3 pin connector for standard rear light assembly.
 
I had a day time MOT on mine (Front lights are @@@@ poor) Anyway the tester told me to tape up ALL the lights, obviously the break light too.

I had trial bikes with daytime mot's. Situation is that you don't require any lights but must have a horn that sounds continuously when operated. ie no bull horns etc.! I put a buzzer type off a push bike on my bike and that was ok. The MOT station will give you a notice advising this is a restricted MOT etc. As regards rear lights etc from what I can undestand if you put a brake light on you also require a legal tail light and therefore a legal headlight. That is according to the MOT man but I suspect the rules are open to interpretation depending who you speak to. There is no requirement for a speedo for the MOT but Mr Plod insists on one if it is used on the road! Halford computer cycle one at £9.99 was fine!

I think I will stick an LED brake light on after I get the day time MOT, I feel safer with a brake light.

I saw The Who quite a few times in the 70's and The Specials, The Selector and The Beat when they came to Leeds in theearly 80's so I suppose that makes me a mod as well.:cool:
