So it begins.webp

Well....
I've unpacked all the boxes of bits (see pics on Laavas build project post) - and this is current status.

Cadet -
  • The engine is in pieces - and mean literally as many bits as possible... so that will be fun figuring out how to get that back together. I've rebuilt things before but not disassembled to this extent. Guessing it can be my Christmas Jigsaw...
  • Theres a few bits missing - Mostly the bodywork bits I think but difficult to tell at the moment. The guy who sold it has shipped a load of stuff over to Thailand in a big move and unfortunately some of the bits are in that - so I'll need to figure out getting those back if they get found.
  • Wheels look ok so will see how they clean up before deciding whether to get them re-chromed. Its neve going to look anywhere as near as good as what Laava has done - I just want it to look decent and be useable - 85% shiny is good enough in my book. I live in the sticks and everything gets covered in shit as soon as I've left our driveway :/
  • Its a 3 speed by the looks of it with the gearchange on the handlebar.
  • Suspension has been completely disassembled for some reason.
Senda -

This is the one I really wanted to get back together and running but...
  • Swingarm is missing
  • Engine is a bit more complete - but needs new piston & rings
  • Suspension is in bits....
  • Think I've got all the bodywork for this thankfully.
  • Front wheel is ok, back is pretty rusty.
I'll keep updated on progress, but it will be SLOW as I've lots of other things I should have finished before i even thought about buying these things... and other things that need looking after :(

Every great journey starts by one step! (y)

However slow you are, we've seen slower. Much slower.

And... 3, 2, 1...

As Laava will tell you, parts are like hens teeth and those people who have them, know how to charge. Italy obviously, some from the Netherlands, some from Greece and a few from the U.K. I found this today who might be able to help if not with parts then perhaps networking with others building the smaller and older Ducati's

Thanks Noobie (y)

Spanish Ebay (El Ebayo) looks promising for Senda bits.

I don't know if you saw yesterdays classified section for ducati's? there was a chap selling three 125's and i think he might have some spares?

If you are rebuilding the motor yourself on the cadet, one thing to be looking out for is the condition of the clutch basket and primary gear. They are Z63 and Z21 respectively. This means that the clutch basket, mine frinstance, will be worn in 3 spots where it coincides with the firing pulse of the smaller pinion. You can off set the basket by 60 deg to alleviate the issue to a small degree but you cannot offset the smaller pinion if it is worn. I managed to find a new pinion but could not find a new clutch basket, or even a better one than mine unless I took a chance on a complete motor. You can spend a lot of time trawling the internet…

I will be rebuilding it myself. Thanks for the pointer - it will be a while until I get to that bit I think lol.
Did you ever find a service manual for the engine?
This is the best I
can find.

These two books will be essentially the same. See what I mean about people expecting stupid money for stuff? The ring bound book is sent from here in NZ. Motueka. Anyway, there does not appear to be an actual workshop manual. I have never seen or heard of one and to be honest, if you have the parts manual then you are probably set. They are a very basic machine

What would the import tax for you at your end on a 2k bike/declared cheaper :D?

Parts have finally turned up, but they are in Thailand….
The nice chap is going to get them packaged up and posted back 🙂 - just got to cover the shipping cost - which to be fair I don’t really care, as long as I get the bits back!

Also managed to find a company in Spain that makes copy decals for the Senda, which I ordered - and the wrong ones arrived, so waiting for the correct ones to turn up now 😬

As for progress.. everything is still in exactly the same location

What's the record? Eleven years?

That was a long build, whew!
His first took 13 years but the current one has already surpassed it - you're getting confused with his Kawasaki Wheel Change.
Mine was measured in hours not years 😇
