:confused:(incase you dont already know :finger:)
...I'm thinking about going S4 Monster route,I know i won't be dissappointed with the motor but will i feel unfulfilled ;) after a 300 mile Mr Burnie jaunt if I dont finish the day with a gubbed neck and shoulders :D
So sports to naked whats the view (I've had a seat on an S4 and was surprised at its lightness and petite size).

From ass in the air to heid in the air?

More like heid up yer ass! :p:lol2:

I tried a 748 and Monster back to back on a run.

From the comfort point of view around town and along twisting B roads the Monster was far more comfortable.
If you are sitting at 90+ for long periods of time you will suffer on the Monster but over time you will develop neck muscles the size of your waist.

The S4 onwards range have plenty of real world power and torque so that shouldn't be an issue.

I've never ridden an S4 or that type of Ducati, but I've had a Tuono which I suppose is in the same market sector.

I love the styling of these types of bikes very much. I loved the sit up riding position too.

What I didn't like, was, the constant wind noise and just how difficult it became just to hold on at higher speeds.

I always ride with ear plugs, but I just couldn't get on with being stuck out in the breeze and the noise it generated when hiking on a bit.

Great fun mind, but a bit tiring having no place to hide from the wind and what ever else the weather chucks at you.

Also found cleaning the engine a bit of a chore on this style of bike.

Adore the naked styling and just how aggressive these bikes can be, and the limitless ways to personalise them.

I'd maybe have one IF I could make more space in the garage!

Heid in the clouds mair like... :p

Well I got my knee down a lot more on my Monster than on my 748 and look at Torquil Patterson on that flat barred sit up and beg thing round East Fortune

The only difference between naked and sports that I find (looks and comfort excepted) is that wee bit of detachment from what the front end is up to actually makes a more enjoyable ride. Even if you aren't cornering as hard (you probably will be) it feels like you are! The higher/wider bars are great for slinging it on its lugs ;) :D

I ride a Monster S2R and an 848 and after a day following DB on the Monster my neck and shoulders are feeling the strain. After a day on the 848 - no pain!

I love the open feel of the Monster and it's much better in urban settings but for longer, faster runs the 848 is far more comfortable and warmer. Both bikes have heated grips, as you know Colin having warmed your hands in the middle of Calendar;), and both have plug ins for my heated bib.

If you haven't had a naked bike I think you should go for it. It's a totally different riding experience, not better or worse, just different, but, as Pict said, a whole different feel to the front end.:D

You need to ask Santa for a bigger garage! ;):)

i agree ask santa for a bigger garage, hypermotard was comfortable up to about 80 mph sitting up right changed my riding possion to more like sports bike postuer and 90+ was ok but after 110 you aint holding that kind of speed for long periods.

depends what u want from the bike, i found 1 hour 30 min was abut all i could stand on hyper before i had to stop on my 999 around scotland have done 2 hours +

the screen sure makes a differance on long runs, so it comes down to comfort or speed i think is what u got to think about

The common issue here seems not to be choice of bike, rather it's DB / BD's routes :D

:D:D
Aye but thats where I'd do most of the spirited miles.
tbh slowing down aint no bad thing is it,surely you can get into some kinda crouchy position(clip ons ;))...I'm just wee Guy after'aw :flash:
So the general view is I would be more tired/sore after a day in the saddle than on my previous bikes,851,916....I wasn't totally gubbed on these bikes just neck and shoulder fatigue.
I do luv the look of the S4,more so than S4r which i know is a step up again in performance/spec...single sider looks mingin...for sports bike only in my view.
I'm going for another look on Monday at it...providing my heads not turned by something else meantime :fart:

I have also been talking to a Guy about his 749s Mono
chap chap....there is men in white coats at my door...........heeeellllpppppppppppppp

Colin,

Get a M1000 - a great bike and easier to clean than an S4 and as it's lighter is easier to ride in the snow and ice.

Oh Aye, feeling each others hands eh, Walter where are you, sort this Colin out, trying to take advantage of your woman :stir::D

Go for it!!!

Go naked young man!!!
I went from owning ST2 and 748, sold them both and bought the monster having never owned a naked bike.....
Totally the right choice so much fun like Lindsay says, I did some decent long runs early and late summer and never found myself tired or sore despite obviously not being very fit after the accident!!
No regrets at all!!:D

:D:D
I'm just wee Guy after'aw :flash:

So i've heard Colin :D. As said above, upright riding posstion is not that good for wind blast, the other thing to take into consideration is the rain, so pros an cons. Just buy the damn thing :D

Simple solution Col...... have a naked and a sport bike.... best of both worlds.;):D

An early M900 will be cheapish, allow for infinite mods/personalisation and also likely to gain value as it nudges into classic status. Win win situation.

Still have a supersport which I had thought about punting or breaking

The most fun I've had on bikes this year have been on upright bikes.
I got the chance of Buell XB12s for the right money so had a punt and I love it.
Plenty of torque and great handling plus it's different.

However, my trusty TDR 250 still gives me the most grins and never fails to surprise people.
Did the trip to Oban with the RD club no bother ( unlike several 400's that needed a 'lift' back ).

I'd imagine the Monster to be similar to the Buell.
Just avoid motorways and it'll be great.

Cracking!! Never had one but used to muck about with lad who did. I bet they are pretty sought after now?

£1000 buys a project. £1500 buys you a cracker.
A guy is selling a couple on Ebay at the moment. I like this one, nice and standard.
Like NC30's the TDRs one of motorcycling's hidden gems.

Here's mine at Squires Two stroke gathering in Sept.

Colin My first Ducati (And Only ONE RIP) was a M600 and I absolutely Loved it as ppl have said avoid Motorways which I didnt and the weather will pass you by . I done 22ooo Miles on teh monster commuting teh gr8 str8 M8 from edinburgh to Glasgow but it was a totally different bike when you went teh back roads ie lang wang carnwath to balerno teh thing came alive.

I am also looking to secure another naked Ducati for teh spring/summer and will be looking at the Monster range or even the streetfighter

oooh an S4 you say, i luv it , so much so it's been sat in bits in 't garage for two years now hummm ~:?

there are a range of different screens available for the monster, all of which affect the comfert of the high speed ride ive found if you crain your neck a bit you loose the buffeting wind noise from the screen and just have the helmate type wind noise

as said previously look at a larger capacity 2 valve one for cheaper running costs etc

on the monster forum its one of the most slated monsters

and theres more bits of ready made tat you can stick to a monster than any other bike (other than a harley I asusme)

Ye Colin,

Stop fannying about and get the 749.....;)

You,ll love it....

for comfort on long runs i could run the tank empty on the 999 before my body would want a rest, and far more wind protection.
problem is its to easy to get board sitting at legal speeds, naked sure is fun,

Accchhh,ah dinnae know :dunno:
Who said this was the best time of the year for buying ,
boll0x to that, there sod all choice, this shecht weather isni helping either, wanted to go for a shot of the S4 tomorrow ..that would go a some way in sorting the naked dilema.

I've not got the patiance for this :mad2:
