Gt1000

Anyone out there got a GT1000? I sold my much loved but underpowered (my opinion) MTS 620 for a GT1000 some months ago and wondered if anyone else owns one, and their thoughts and views on the bike

Give borderduc a shout mate, he's had his a while now and probably clocked a few major services by now knowing him!! ;)

Yes indeed. I got my GT1000 after deciding that my years of being bent double on Ducati sports bikes (wonderful as they are) are over and comfort is the word these days. Being of a "certain age" too I really like retro-styled bikes and the Ducati Sportclassics are, well, classic - just stunning. Visually, my favourite is the Sport 1000s but the wrists wouldn't take it so I went for the Gt1000. I didn't really like it that much when I saw the pics, especially the two-tone, but I was really taken with it when I saw one at Ducati Glasgow in the showroom kitted up with screen, panniers, rack, etc. Just like a 70s Ducati - with the baffles out of the Termis it sounds like one too !. On last year's Midgie Masher it performed brilliantly on all sorts of road surfaces. Sure, you'll not keep up with a 1098 but that's missing the point of it.

I'm not sure of any other UK forums but you'll find a good one at http://www.ducati.ms/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=77 with lots of Sportclassic threads and info.

The only minor points I have found are the lack of a hugger (which 70s bikes didn't have but which would keep the undercarriage clean, so check out http://www.worldofqbcarbon.com/welcome/welcome.htm ) and a centre stand, which Ducati now make, so that nice chap Harry at Ducati Glasgow would help you out there.

That's a recommendation then. Hope to see you on a DUN run on a nice GT this year ! :)

You'll be forming the Ducati Old Codgers Club next :p

I can't remember any '70's Ducatis with screen rack and panniers  Not even the GTS which the GT1000 most closely resembles.
The GT1000 is a nice looking bike though a pair of Conti replicas would look good on it and sound even better. :D

Hey, laddie...nane o' yer lip noo...:mmph:

You're right, 70s Ducs didn't have screens but what I meant was the Sportclassics have a 70s look and feel about them. So maybe not an exact replica but we can see through it...:lol2:

Thanks lads for the reply. Well I truly love my GT and so miss not being able to go out on her in this god awful weather here in Yorks.

I bought my bike with just a couple of hundred miles on the clock and have notched up around 2k since I bought her in June. For me as an "old Codger" it is a perfect Duke, well for the time being at least!

One major problem I have though and not sure you experience the same Borderduc, is that when away from other bikers parked up in (say) Settle, every one and there dog comes over to look at her. Now if that does not say something about the beauty of the bike not sure what does. So power to the old codgers I say!

Will be great to meet up on a ride out some time. We are planning a trip (me, son and his girlfriend) to Scotland when the weather gets warmer, so maybe try to tie up with a DuN ride out and have a chin wag.

Keep in touch Border, would love to hear how you get on with your bike and I Will like wise.

Its normal for every Ducati owner to experience this but I have never found it a problem!

'My' GT1000

Its a great bike. We had a couple of minor issues last season with ours:

1. Mirrors that shake loose - not the end of the world
2. Front brake master cylinder resevoir cover - all the screws vibrated loose one day - could have been nasty.....
3. It stalls at tickover when cold
4. Has been known to waggle the bars quite alarmingly.....

Ridden properly its fast enough, very comfortable, economical and looks good. Could do with louder pipes though

You wanna try parking a 749 with white wheels,Termi's, open cover with slipper clutch, tankbag and scrubbed Racetecs at Devil's bridge, LOL - eh Steve !

Well, you are the sort of person that easily takes it in your stride and enjoys the attention!

Back to the plot!!

Yup I too have experienced mirrors working loose, and also the need to allow the engine to warm up well before moving off............but!! when I spoke about the cold start to my friendly Wolves dealer, he told me to only use the higher octane fuel (You know the stuff thats an exra £42.50 per litre) and the problem will be solved, er yeah right on brother!

Anyway, I thought I would run the tank right down and fill up with Shell supa dupa higher level octane. Problem damn right solved! couldnt beleive it! I know there is some discussion as to whether this "better"..........no, more expensive fuel is better, but without doubt it is now the only fuel I would use for the GT. No need to warm up, no stalling from the off, and by jimminy jingo such smooth power and definately no comparison to the usual stuff I would use.

Am I dreaming, or has anyone else noticed that in some circumstances the higher octane is better? I await the barracking! :dunno:

Agree about the Shell Optimax, read quite a few recommendations for Shell fuel in general (best detergent qualities apparently) and Optimax in particular. I think you get slightly better consumption with Optimax as well, which offsets the cost a bit.

Try it with ordinary petrol and a capful of acetone in each tankful, a cheaper option if you can buy it by the litre.

Interesting Steve.

If I remember rightly it is possible to get acetone from model shops in larger quantities. And from there I guess it is posible to buy at a more reasonable price from source. But I think I would be sh*t scared using it just in case...............well just in case!!

Any other views?

Is this a wind up?

...........I dont think so, but would be hellish nervous about using it in case me nail varnish came off during an important trip!!............Yeah its ok I know it has been used as a fuel additive!!

Geoff

I was using it and it did make a difference, just a cap fulll per tank. Some b@st@rd cut short the trial on my home though:eek:

Can't say I've noticed any fuelling issues, especially with the Termis letting it rev very freely. Nice and smooth running, and loud as you like !. These Australian pipes (Zard, Zorst, Zebediah Do-Dahs or whatever they're called) sound great too, judging by some of the clips on MS forum and YouTube.

Putting on a smaller front sprocket definitely helps too.
