Heaven.... & HeLL!!

Lovely sunny day at home in the Lakes. Dry roads, sticky rubber, 916 SP finally on the road and it showed me exactly why after 6 years I so love it. Nothing comes close... Heaven.
Then the engine seized locking the back wheel.
Clutch in so no crash, but the engine is goosed.
I dread to think of the damage, cost and three weeks after being made redundant the time before I can afford to fix it.
Slick Bass gave me advice that helped and it will go to him to try and fix.
No real point to the post except I am feeling sorry for myself and cannot sleep!

Crap :( what seized? and do you know why?

Do you not fancy a go at stripping/rebuilding yourself? Even if its just getting the engine out it'll save money and be interesting to do plus with digital cameras its easy to photograph how it all goes back together.

I will second that. My first and only engine overhaul was 2 years ago on a Honda cbx1000 six cylinder job....With lots of pictures, plastic bags, labels and help from the CBX forum I did it all my self.

not sure yet what gave up. Revs went up, power went down and the the rear locked solid. Slick says it is possible blocked crankshaft oilways, or there are some 'bungs' of aluminium that can work loose due to different expansion rates. Not likely the belt.

I was going to take the engine out myself, but if Slick is to fix it I would pay £200 for return pallet shipping to the Isle of Man. This is the same as wheeling the bike off the ferry return.

If I tried to do it myself my only concern is I don't have the skill to spot other things that may be wrong and labour is not so bad... it is the parts. I could not afford new parts and then it lunches again.

But Gizmo you are right.... I would prefer to be hands on rather than pass it over to someone to do. It's just the parts prices that scare me

Slicks labour-£700
Parts upto £ £1500 from ducati
That's my estimate so far

oh bugger - sorry to hear about the bike and the redundancy. Hope you get sorted out one way or the other.

Revs up, power down, rear locks up - doesn't that sound more like clutch/gearbox? I don't think an engine would rev up just before seizing.

DKM god bless you. Went up to the garage and the bike (now stone cold) went into nuetral and.... started!
Engine ok. Sorry everyone I assumed the worst.
Local shop picking it up with a van in the morning to investigate the transmission.
Yesterday, it was locked solid, would not start - today it fired up.

There is a God! I repent of all the things I shouted at you in the garage last night.
I also retract all the Italian stereotypes and the stream of expletives on hearing a new SP crank was over £1000!

This is how a forum helps complete mechanical imbeciles like me:lol2:....

You must be the owner of one of those rare beasties...

A self diagnosing and repairing Ducati........:)

I know a man that can and would probably be thankful of the cash !

Thanks for the ideas everyone. I suppose if it is the transmission the engine still must come out and be opened up. I think the bike will have to back to it's garage corner and this becomes another 'project'. Anyone in Kendal is welcome to pop over for a cup of tea this week, kick the 916 tyres, show me nice working examples of Ducati... Or a ride to Devils Bridge.... I have a Honda that is working!
