Help! 900ss piston rings?

900ss rings are notoriously hard to get and are very expensive if you can find them, not much more to replace the complete piston assembly. There must be some other engine somewhere that has the same size of rings but I've never found a cross reference.

I tried dealers, they seemed to have no problem offering rings, but at £130-£140 a set, I thought I'd explore other sources. Found JE Pistons in California, standard piston set of rings $22.31 + $140 shipping by UPS, or £140 via TNT, or $8 to a pal of mine in Ocean Bay CA and his postage onwards from there... Then I discovered that the UK importer for JE Pistons is TTS Performance at Silverstone - they'd charge £24.75 + p&p + VAT for the same rings = bargain! The it all went the shape of the pear when it became apparent we were at cross purposes - the rings quoted were for a JE manufactured standard piston for a Ducati, not a Ducati standard piston and were slightly too short heightwise so would have too much movement in the ring bed.

The local Ferrari Piston Service (FPS) depot manager has said he's willing to look into Subaru Impreza rings as possible alternatives - 92mm isn't sufficient to come up with alternatives, e,g, the top Ducati compression ring is 'L' shaped, thus adding to the challenge. However, if I do come up with an alternative, rest assured, I won't keep it a secret.
