That Nightstorm is just gorgeous, i used to have a Flare (unfortunately missing the Box fork) and the paintwork on these is incredible, it looks dull in a photo but in real life outdoors the paintwork is luminescent, it pops and changes tones and hues. The amount of time that went into spraying these bikes originally would make them cost a couple of grand just for the paintwork. Proper works of art.

They're just beautifully made, they came out about the time Mountain Biking was just getting big and they were the cover stars of the magazines at the time. Oh, and expensive. The Nightstorm (purple bike) is kitted out with arguably the best equipment, that purple rear derailleur is probably worth £1k on its own, Chainset about £500. It's all just in limited supply and the people who lusted after them as teens now have spare income, the same can be said of Escort Cosworths and Subaru 22B's at the moment. Lust and limited numbers mean ££££'s.

When mountain biking started properly Rob, it started in Marin county in the U.S. by a group known as the Repacker's. Names some might know who went on to create their own bike ranges such as Gary Fisher, Joe Breeze, Charlie Kelly, Bob Buckley, Gary Klien, Steve Fox.

Kliens in particular were all hand made and made by top craftsman which is why they hold a higher price. They were made in Chehalis, Washington when Gary started the Klein bike company in 1980 I think? His bikes at the time, were seen as the rolls royces of bikes but like so many artisan companies, the big boys were buying and late 95, Trek bought the company with the last of the real Kleins being made around 96/97. Trek started mass producing cheaper lookee likee models and eventualy moved what was left in 2002 to Trek hq in Wisconsin. The model range was killed off 2007, with the last of the chinese models killed off in 2009.

This is what makes the pre 97 Kleins quite valueable and sought after, particularly the Attitude and androit models. Almost all of those after 97 (with the exception of a handfull of stragglers) were known by enthusiast's as a TreKlein and the value wasn't there nor are they collectable.
