Insurance companies are mental

Just rang up to change my policy over from the S4 to the ST4s. Amazingly, they wanted 50% more than I'd just paid in June!! robbed £133 :-(

I asked for an explanation as to why it was so mch more. Her justfication was that the bike was already 10% more to insure due to the bigger engine (and I guess faired bikes are more expensive to insure than nakeds too?), but I'd also "lost" the 30% discount they were giving me because I'd had the S4 for 3 years WTF?!?!

I guess it's their way of saying I'm more likely to crash an unfamiliar bike, rather than one I've been riding 3 years and not crashing? or maybe they just make the figures up as they go along....

Then the funny part, for £30 I could keep the Monster insured as well as the ST4s. er, oh go on then! :-)

Nuts.

Aye, I got stung on this for the car...Owned it 3 years, the first two years = £220. This year it jumped to £330. No claims, no change of address, no change in personal circumstances, no fines, no accidents, another year of no claims, and a drop of £1500 in value. Yet I get a £110 increase. WTF? Shopping around didn't help either - everyone wanted £300+ for my shitty Skoda Fabia (fully comp).

All becauase of increased injury claims? Aye, that'll be f*ing right. Methinks they saw that everyone else were ramping up their prices to stupids levels above inflation, and they wanted in on the act.

I'd like to see how they justify 2012's increases, given we've been crashing a lot less (source: this month's Superbike mag).

I'm not looking forward to the Bayliss insurance quote in 2012, since I slung it dooon the road trhis year. :)

If it's any consolation after my Conservatory rebuild claim last December topping £10,000 only 2 companies would even give me a quote this year to renew, my current and the previous years provider. One of them was double the usual premium and the other was triple....both with a £2,000 excess this time

Good luck Chiz....

when i went to renew my st the oprice had gone up by £100 , same as you guys no claims, no nothing different. i ended up insuring the ducati, vespa and lambretta on one policy for about £35 more than my renewal on the ducati would have been. go figure

3 claims in a 5 year period or any one claim over £10k and you will struggle to get cover.

I mentioned previously the issues here but your biggest issue will be a very restricted market because of the type and value of bike.
It is going to be the same problem for those buying the 1199. There will be maybe 2 or 3 underwriters at the most that will touch it and in reality it will be whoever Ducati Insurance hook up with or no-one.

TRied Ducati insurance? Nobody would insure me at one point and they came up trumps for me. And even after a £5K claim, paid with no problem hasn't changed it much. Just remember that loyalty to any of them never pays - they always want to reward new customers. Oh for the days of Norwich's biker policy when you could have as many bikes as you wanted on one policy.

wooo robbie that is a lot. i found if you data tag your bike it relay brings your insurance down i went from £1000 with no data tag to £530 all most hath the prise the best plase and cheapesed as well that i found was m and p for the data tag. good luck every one.

Well try this then.
Bayliss is kept behind a electrically operated security wrought-iron gate.surrounded on 3 sides by 3 x 8ft wrought iron fences with spikes on top. The other wall is a 12ft stone wall.
It is kept in an esure security shed.
It has the Ducati alarm system. It has a meta alarm system, AND also a GPS tracker system fitted
Nobody would insure me until DG stepped in & got me cover with Ducati Insurance at a whopping £2K a year.NOW THERES A HI QUOTE. :(:(:(:(
Thats after 32 trouble free years on a bike with no claims.
Now after my wee off & £14K worth of damage to the bike I am shuddering as to what next years quote will be.
HATS OFF TO DUCATI INSURANCE THOUGH, AS THEY HAD NO ISSUES & PICKED UP THE TAB FOR THE DAMAGE THIS YEAR. :):):

I haven't found that many problems getting the MTS1200S insured and it's just slightly less expensive than the base 1199. Price was initially double my old 1100S, but I guess that's to be expected (old bike was 3 years old). Down to under £300 now, although the postcode is "good" for insurance purposes.

The additional of locks, alarms, datatag, etc. seems a bit of a lottery. On my last bike there was one insurer who wanted to charge extra if I locked it up with a chain + padlock + ground anchor! Needless to say I still locked it and just didn't add that to the form.

Chiz, my advice this year would be to make sure you are sat down, have a strong drink to hand and someone else with smelling salts on hand when you open your renewal letter ;):D

Personally, I'm hoping for a reduction in my Daivel insurance, as I got royally hosed this year, as only a few companies were insuring it back then.

Then again, I'll be in Switzerland come renewal time, and I doubt that'll happen.

If it is a SILLY SILLY Quote, then the bikes are going & I will becoming a Nissan GTR owner.
Rather have mental fun on 4 wheels, than prat about with Bike Insurers.
Hello NIssan GTR club :):):
HOPEFULLY NOT & sticking with 2 wheels.

"Price was initially double my old 1100S, but I guess that's to be expected (old bike was 3 years old)" Are 1100s parts half the price of 1200 Numptystradas? I doubt it. Problem is thinking logically about insurance i.e. "If I do x or y my insurance will decrease but if it's stolen or dropped it'll increase" in my experience this doesn't happen (Biggest Decrease was year after I had a bike stolen). As far as I know (and welcome enlightenment) the only thing restricting insurance costs are market forces. Of course, insurance companies would never collude would they?

You have to consider the "total loss" situation.

If my 1100S was stolen / crashed to point of being written-off (easily done on an older bike), they would have given me around £3k (max).

If the same thing happened to the 1200S, they would have been looking at £12-£13k.

Then you need to think about how desirable to thieves a 3 year old bike (original cost £8.5k) with 26,000 miles on the clock is vs a 6 month old one (original cost £14.5k) with 5,000 miles...

As for the price difference between parts - the 1200 probably has 50% more parts! While the plastics, etc. are going to be about the same, I wouldn't fancy shelling out for a complete set of electronic Ohlins forks, probably in the region of £2k just for them!

FWIW, my first years insurance after passing my bike test was £950 TPFT (the bike was worth £2,400 new), but of course, that was when I was young and foolish! ;)

How many ducatis do you think are legally insured with bennets in light of there 3 mod rule? Not many i am guessing!!

When I recently changed from the Aprilia Mille to the 749S it was a joke. MCE said the current insurer would not cover me on the 749S unless I got an alarm fitted so they said would have to cancel the policy and start again. Thats £300 (I think) sir. Quick search and Compared the Meerkat and MCE show up on there £100 cheaper. Phone back and they say they cannot match their own proce on the comparison site!!

Loads of other quotes under £300 but eventually went with Ducati insurance who were about £220 I think.....

Aye, they are intersting to deal with.
As I said earlier in an earlier post. I was uninsurable with the Bayliss & that was after 32 years upright.
It was the price of the bike that frightened them all off.I tried over 15 companiees before DG got me assistance with Ducati Insurance & even that was a struggle.
2012 quote will be interesting for sure.
