Insurance for a bike that is off the road.

Hi, I bought a new bike today, Ducati of course, and once she gets her bike licence my wife will be the rider of my current bike (called Aggie). Aggie is due for insurance renewal soon and was road taxed last month, but I dont really want to pay for a full policy as it will just be sitting in my lock up once I pick up Chloe (new bike's name).

I have heard there is a policy for 'Laid up' bikes. Has anyone ever had this type of policy? Do you know if it offers the same protection aganst theft/damage as an on the road policy?

I would also appreciate any pointers towards companies who may offer this type of cover if it is worthwhile.

Cheers in advance

 get a quote for a multi bike insurance it might be a couple of pounds more

Couple of specialists do a laid up policy.
Footman James does (10% discount for SDC members) and I think Carole Nash does as well.
You will probably get choice of cover which will be Fire & Theft or F&T plus accidental damage.
Effectively you get Comp and TPF&T minus road risks cover.
However be careful!!!
If you have a taxed bike but no insurance for the road the DVLA will be on your case very quickly!
If you are going down this route you should SORN the bike.
You can have insurance for the road and a SORNed bike but not a taxed bike and no insurance.
If you are getting quotes ask them specifically on this point!
My understanding of the "Laid up" policy is that your bike will NOT appear on the Motor Insurance Database and that is what the DVLA use to check taxed vehicles.
