Lucky escape

Last thursday decided to go for a wee spin down the a7 with a mate.He and partner were going down to the lakes,as I was working next day I thought ,go half way and then turn back.It was all going well till we got to Teviothead, nice long straight road followed by a sweeping corner, must have been doing around 120mph :D i overtook my mate and a car and as i was coming out of the bend i thought i'll give it a wee more gas, when all of the suddent, i heard this weird noise, three things went through my head :oh S*it,the chain is gone and the rear wheel is going to lock at any moment,So grabbed the brake and clutch and pulled to the side, luckily for me nothing happened apart from both of the rear mudguards damaged. That's not all when i got my insurance i never bothered getting roadside recovery  so had to get the girlfriend to search the net and give me the phone number for this wee garage in Denholm, recovery and new chain £75, but (it gets better) the chain was not the right one (but it still got me home) so had to fork out another £85 for the right one  + the 17 quid for road side recovery wich includes parts etc..:mad2: I've learnt a lesson, there's a few photos

no @@@@ lucky escape, ive heard these chain snaps can have devastating consequences, Paul was similarly lucky just recently

Andy, thats @@@@e....I would be thinking about a full claim against the chain makers.......its snapped in the middle of the link and wrecked your bike. :comp2:

Scary s*it mate, heard of some cases where the chain punched a hole in the back of the crankcases, or could have locked my back wheel,so many things could have gone wrong :scratchhead: ,anyway that's one of the pleasures of biking eh, what can you do. :ohwell:

Andy,
I just changed the chain on my ST4s at 13,800 miles because some of the links were getting a bit tight. I was getting concerned about just this sort of thing happening, a stiff link at 120mph is going to generate a fair bit of heat!
Annoyingly, the chain was nowhere near worn out and has always been regularly cleaned and oiled but the internal lubrication within the rollers would appear to be failing and the X-rings make it difficult to get any fresh lubrication in there. How many miles were on the chain? Were any links stiff to turn?

Andy when we were at Tyndrum I thought I saw pedals on that bike could you not have just pedalled back and saved the recovery charge :D

Seriously it could have been worse for you and bike glad its not too bad.

you are lucky , my chain snapped on my nc30 back in the day, it went through the gear box and made a right mess, it was never the same.

The chain was about eight months old Derek, would say it's done about 8000 miles,What you've said about internal lubrication is spot on (I did take care of it too).took it to Brian to see what he thought & what was the cause and he asked me if i've used a pressure washer to clean the bike ,(which over winter time i did) so according to brian a pressure washer removes the internal lubrication(not only from the chain, head bearings "n" wheel bearings aswell)hence no matter how well the chain is looked after on the outside, if there's no lubrication inside, game over  could not tell you about stiff links as i did not check the chain for this matter, you learn something new everyday eh (carefull when using a p.washer)

It is almost standard practice with any form of off road bike to pressure wash it at the end of the day. To my cost I found it is too easy to get "have fun" with a power washer and wonder why your chain or bearings are suddenly shot. Detergent applied before washing speeds up the process!

weve had a few chain breaks on the site recently that have been verrrrrrrry lucky, could have been different.

have a drink & always look after your chain.
