Motorcycle shipping to Oz

No sure if this is the right forum, but here goes

Has anyone shipped a bike abroad........apart from usual european trackdays.........my son and his wife are emigrating to Oz in June and I thought when I visit them it might be good to have a bike to ride while I'm there. I've done the usual interweb searches, but all the shippers I've viewed want specific dates before quoting. I only want a general idea of costs at the moment. The other option is to give him the dosh to buy one over there, but that's a whole other ball game. Any help welcome.
Thanks
Brian

Shipping rates are all over the place at the moment, we're seeing increases every month on stuff from Asia and anyone quoting will want dates so they can do so a bit more accurately.

Remember that everyone who handles the box wants money, the additional fees soon add up, check what the duty rates are as well, last thing you want is to get it there then get hit with a customs bill and depending upon how long its there you may need to get it registered as well. I just looked at shipping costs for me sister who bought a house on Fuertaventura and wanted to get furniture out but its actually cheaper to buy new there.

Don't rule out air shipping it, we import from US and rates for air aren't far away from sea for mid sized boxes and a motorcycle ain't that big really.

I saw this company mentioned somewhere, don't know where but I kept name anyway, guide price for Aus is from £625

It might still work out cheaper jsut to rent when you are there though :)

Have to agree with Gizzmo, a year ago my stepson wanted to take his old XT Yamaha accross to OZ as he is a sheep shearer and the costs were ridiculous in relation to the value of the bike! He ended up selling it in the UK and bought one out there, but in your case I think rental is the way fwd...
Hope this helps...:D

Thank guys. Just had the same sort of info from a couple of companies I contacted. Had a nice email from an australian bike shipper currently their rates are about £800 all included at current exchange rates for 1 month trip, but would have to get the bike crated and down to Felixstowe plus I'd be without the bike for a month before the trip and a month after. So on that basis hiring or buying over there is looking a better bet.

I suppose as a last resort I could always ride it over:eek:

Brian,

If you're going to the Strathyre meet I'll try and remember to bring a few copies of Australian Motorcycle News (it's a long story but I get it every fortnight). That's full of ads for bike hire, shipping, biking ideas, etc. which you might not find on the internet. And it is a well-written mag too.

Thanx to all

Last night I had a phone call from a company in Oz called Bikenut very helpful, full service shipping will run to about £1100 and as the man from Bikenut said that's a hell of a lot of bike hire. Seems they can also find a way of getting a bike insured should I choose to buy one and they could do a buy back if I bought it from them. So all I need now is for my boy to shift his a@@e and get over there:D
