My Ultimate Ducati !

Someone else's now!

Like the way he's propped it up against the wall to take the photos. Obviously more money than sense :fou: :fou:

No No No!

What you really want is a 996R. As you can see from my pic they are much prettier without the ostentatious carbon seat unit etc of the 998R.

As you can also see the 996r is far better balanced than the common 998r in fact you may notice mine needs nothing as vulgar as a wall or indeed a sidestand to keep it upright.View attachment 1195

Silly boy!

As Martin says, the 996R is far better - trounced hon-@@@@ey-da the year it was unleashed in WSB and was sold out the day it was released.

I thought there was hope for you, clearly you've not been listening!! ;)

sorry guys, i love the 996r but the 998 well ya know, its just more bling than the 996. theres less of them too ?

Less 996R's

Looking for bling eh? Typical weegie I s'pose, remember to tuck your shell suit bottoms into you socks! :p

700 998r against 500 996r! In fact I think only 350 996r went to private customers. The rest to race teams etc.

I find it disturbing and upsetting that these special bikes go for so little money. When you think of their cost to buy.
I do reckon that in a few years time they will be fetching loadsa money!!

Did Ducati not end up building around 800 996r's in the end.I know that they built more than the original 500.

Speaking as a 998R owner i would like to point out i am not biased in any way whatsoever.:)

No, 996r's were only limited to the initial production run of 500 as the sandcasting process for the engine was not suitable for any further.

All 350 destined for sale to the public were sold in one day over the internet, and the company also set up a reserve list should anyone drop out of the buying process.

The remaining 150 bikes were reserved for race teams. However, the take up on these machines was slow as there was some fears over the new developments in the testastretta engine. As a result, some of these 150 bikes were later offered for sale to the public - this is where the misconception of the production run being expanded comes from.

HTH :D

It's when sand is used to form the moulds for casting.

As a production technique it's slow and labour intensive, but, doesn't require the same initial investment as tooling up for mass production.

Since when can't you type your question into google ya sticky fingered weagie tink! ;)

whats sandcasting scott ?

/ian

Ducati have used this process for a long time. The original 750 twins from 1971 onwards (Paul Smart's 72 Imola bike etc) were all sandcast. Some of these bikes had porosity problems due to this technique and Ducati dropped it for mass production.

Modern sandcasting processes have mostly eliminated those problems though, it still lends itself to limited production runs very well.

.... used is the casting of railway track and points systems.... company in bathgate exstensively do this....
