Colin,
Yes is the short answer.
I can't list all the differences but the R came out in 2000 as a direct replacement for the SPS, which in turn replaced the SP in 97/98.
The SP/SPS/R variant was made for homologation purposes for the race bikes and produced in limited numbers.
The early R had a problem I understand with a large flat spot that many dealers couldn't sort. It would appear that trying to squeeze more horses out of the motor had a price to pay.
The SP etc motors had titanium rods, Ohlins etc.
Guy that sold me the SPS bought an R and phoned me after 6 months saying he wished he'd never sold it!
You would need to check with others to see what the overall view was in case the problems still exist if you fancied an R.

Oh and the SP/SPS only came in yellow whereas the R was red or yellow. Having said that the only R's (note no a or e in there!) I have seen have been red.

AIR there are significant differences just between 2000 and 2001 R spec 748's never mind between various year S and R's. the 01 R had ohlins, up specc'ed brakes, lighter wheels, different air box, lighter crank, pistons and flywheel and possibly a different chassis?

Wikipedia have a short section on the various models but it doesn't list all the year change differences.

you also need to check the bike you are interested in is the correct model year compared to registration date, they can differ.

The engines are more highly tuned than an S so expect bigger service bills :(

Claire (Lily) had an R and can probably tell you bit more about owning one.

Good point, my bike is a mid 99 registration but actually built 98. Quite common with Ducati. In the past the factory would just put out whatever they had lying about and different forks, wheels etc could be fitted depending on what was available.
Old habits die hard but shouldn't be as much of a problem with your particular interest. Customers normally get what they order these days. All part of the charm of ownership.:)

wuppsss my fault :o its a 749s but it just goes to show so many diff models my head hurts lol

748 is small brother (or sister) of 916/996/998 and visually looks the same (single side swing arm) and 749 is small sibling of 999.
