Actually some progress - unusual for me
Bought the ricambi short fairing and single seat unit. Quality isn't that bad to be honest; better than I expected. yes they need the odd bit of filler and wet&dry but no worse than any gf race bodywork i've ever had.
I'll be fully fitting the lot before painting. First jobs I need to sort out are the front subframe, remounting the coils and get an tail light.
I think the front sub frame needs cutting so need to look for a spare one to chop up as the oringinal is a sparkly metal flake job and I'm not going near it with a hacksaw or grinder.
Also considering mirrors with led indicators to keep a clean look and I'm going to get a custom seat pad sorted out - once I figure out how......

Re: LED mirrors, I was just about to stick a pair I bought from Germany to 'fit' my Aprilia Falco - sadly, the angle was ridiculous and the only mounting movement is forward/aft with no movement in any other direction, same as these :

...The race fairing isn't an option as arrived at its new owners house today - there's another minitwin SS on the horizon, its a bike I know & I'm waiting with baited breath to see it running on track...
Wait no longer here it is. I re sprayed it myself in sort of Althea colours, with yellow boards to meet the MT regs. First race 25th March with W100 at Anglesey.
These pics are from a recent track day at Oulton, my first time on it. The bike runs perfect and has been set up bob on, I just need more time on it as the power delivery is something special and will take a bit of getting used to.

Nah, it's current, just needs me to get moving.
I've got a target now, I've booked the bike into the SDC track evening in May so I'll start working on it very soon. Bikini fairing first as I can always slip the 916 tail unit on if (if?............ course it's an if) I run low on time.

I've actually started, as in properly started. Only taken 18 months :jerkoff:
Front fairing is almost fitted and I've had to do a lot of cutting to the seat unit. I want to make the aftermarket fibreglass look as factory as possible, tall order I know but gotta try.
I've installed the original under tray with the seat, seat isn't mounted yet but it is cut - front and back as the shape was out a bit. Fairing has pretty much went straight on. Lots to do though;
Install all the road electrics
Find the choke lever!
Find the side stand!
Buy another tank. Going back to the original Senna Grey, the fuel tank is in the loft but it's totally unmolested and I want to fit the carbon tank shield same as the red tank; however I don't want to cut the nipple of the original tank so I need a donor Senna Grey tank.
Just charged the battery but wont turn it over until its had a belt change. Siting unused since a track night at Knockhill in July 2011 and a years racing before that means theses belts are not worth the risk.
Plenty more to come over the next month. Bodywork will be carefully sanded and a filling primer used before painting. I'll be painting myself as usual but this will be the best finish I've ever done.

Front fairing is now sussed. Were taking a bracket off the tank rest on each side. All the loom has been re-routed. Turns out to get the big connector in a place that works it needs to be tywrapped above its mounting point.
Coils are going under the seat as they show and get in the way of the mini fairing, a better place for crash damage anyway.
Fitting the seat is taking a bit of thought, looks like we will take mould under the seat with expanding filler foam to shape everything right sine the seat came with no bracket work and no clues as to how to fit.
Been a good day but also found out what else I seem to have lost......

Todays been a good day;

Rear end of the seat bracket work sorted. Knocked up out of angle, sorry about the bolt lengths, beggars and chosers etc; all I had in the majic bolt box.
Took a bit of trial and error to get the the heights right. The alloy plate over the top is where the Dzus will go for the seat fixings. Just the front end of the seat and rear top fairing fixings to finish then we can sort out the body work for painting.

Not so long ago I made some tailights by buying round reflectors with a chrome trim, drilling a hole in the middle and sinking-in an LED. You could use two, putting a brighter LED in one as a brake, or maybe one above another. You could also use one of those LED bolts that the car guys have to illuminate the number plate. Thanks for the reply; I'm OK with the reg plate light as I've put the original mudguard / number plate hanger back on - despite the fact this in an aftermarket bodywork set up I'm trying to make it look as 'factory' as possible.
I've decided on the front mirrors / combined indicators now and we're getting these FAR ones specific to the SS from Cyccon
I wanted red ones, but they are out of production, in the end I've went boring and settled for satin black.

You might want to look at an old english light such as a Lucas 'Sabrina' style like they had on bantams. That's 'pointy'

Originally it was a normal SS ie tail unit which is tucked away in the loft. Now it's the same tail unit as this black bike

They've both went for a recessed LED in the rear of the seat; I'm thinking about an led item mounted on a bracket on the top side of the mudguard above the number plate light so not actually on the tail.
This is for two reasons - aesthetics (gotta look a little different to everyone else) and ease of access in to the seat. It'll be mounted with 4 fast release Dzus fixings to gain access to the underseat storage so I don't want wires from the loom connecting onto the seat unit it's self.

we have the seat mounted and its solid. Built from 50*50*5mm angle, 27mm U Bolts and Dzus fasteners. The front mount also houses the coils which are bolted on with head cover bolts of a BMW.
Rear mount got redone with the angle and the old front seat mount from the 9*6 race seat. This time its a much more elegant and better engineered solution than the 2009 racing build.
We seat the bike up for front & rear Dzus fixings but with only the front pair done its solid and going nowhere.
One surprise though, the seat is not as generous as it looked of the bike. It's a really tight fit so the tank pad will deffo have to come of the grey tank to give as much room as possible.

Use U channel and round off the edges at least. It'll get rid of the bolt together angles

Valid points folks.
I always modify my bikes in a non permanent way to ensure I can always put back to standard without damaging the bike.
If I'd thought up front about U channel then yes, that would have been better. As it stands the coils would have been slightly harder to install but nothing insurmountable. On the other hand doing U channel now won't improve structural rigidity or aesthetics since the bracket is solid & totally hidden by the seat.
I will smooth it off though - we had to work it out as we went along, and yes it does need to be finished.
The coils are inside the stock under tray and 'should' be better protected than they were before. I'll look a bit closer at this.

Far mirrors look great in the pre build set up. Not sure if I should keep the amber winker covers or change to the white ones with amber lamps. ???

The tail lamp only cost a tenner so will upgrade it at some point to a model that fits the rectangle better. Checked the wiring and it works fine, I've got bullet connecters and water proof connecters on order from vehicle wiring products on order so the final bits of wiring will be complete at the weekend.
Grey tank is fitted out and the carbon pad is on. Fuelled up and fired up too! It was great hearing the air cooled rumble again.

belts
replacement R&G crash bung for rhs
Might put the stock rearsets on, the ones on the bike are maybe a bit radical for road riding and aren't adjustable. No pennies for new ones just now.
Not far to go, prep work on the bodywork is the important job now.

Wee Harry had a set of DP rearsets for an i.e. in his 'Parts Manager Specials' bin for yonks - if he still has them you would maybe get a deal?

BTW, PPG call the paint "Grigrio Senna" rather than Grigrio Scuro same code though.

looking good. Are you mounting indicators in the recesses on the bikini fairing?Post some more pics, they are such similar builds it would be good to see them back to back (although yours looks closer to finished)

, the lad whos done it for me dosent even like black and tried to desuade me, but I've always wanted but never had a black bike before.
Yeah, got some small rizoma leds to go in, but wish i'd filled the recesses first, might do it next winter.
Mine should be closer, it was a perfectly working road bike, till I started
Still waiting for some more shiny bits and then I can get it all back together in the next week or two, I'll post some more pics up then
I need to take it Ducati John so he can give it the once over cos its been stood since 2005, all being well I'm then hoping

I had a black bike for 3 months - a KTM 660. The bodywork costs around £100 a time to change so it was a few colours! I'm filling the indicator recesses before I paint them, looking for a clean neat finish to the whole bike. Probably should change the rear indicators for something more modern but not a priority just now.
I'm doing one bit of black on the bike which I forgot to mention; I'm dying the cam belt covers black. £3.00 compared to £100+ for a set of carbon belt covers. Actually just want to try it as dying them feels like an interesting thing to do.
Hopefully Mid May for on the road. Having not insured a road bike for nearly a decade due to the track addiction I'm dreading looking for quotes.
I'm doing one bit of black on the bike which I forgot to mention; I'm dying the cam belt covers black. £3.00 compared to £100+ for a set of carbon belt covers. Actually just want to try it as dying them feels like an interesting thing to do.

Rit Dye, the Mrs best Turkey pan and the cooker for another 50 mins. I probably should have sorted the evening meal first.
Oh dear.... hungry now
Cooking belt covers and sprocket cover for an hour, should be nice and black by 19:00 hrs.
