There are a lot in NI too, just like the rest of the UK. Fortunately they’re few and far between here (but they are being introduced
, on a dead straight roads with no junctions and no history of accidents - purely a revenue raising enterprise it seems 
)

I'm glad we did 60mph on the Scottish roads whilst we still had the chance 
I wonder how many people in England know that vans are already restricted to 50 mph on dual carriageways in Scotland?
A mate of mine got ticket for doing 60 mph on a dual-carriageway in a small car-derived panel van in Scotland. It's a PITA when you own both a van and a car and you live close to Scotland and regularly drive on both sides of the border in different vehicles.
If you live in England and you need to travel to Scotland in a van be very careful.
The 50 mph limit for HGVs on single carriageways is already causing dangerous driving. If an HGV can't go above 50 mph that frequently becomes 40 mph or less when it comes to a hill. Car drivers rapidly get pissed off and dangerous overtaking ensues.
This is just the Scottish government being different for the sake of it to "prove" that Scotland needs independence (and to collect revenue of course, which is why these speed limit differences are not widely publicised). Ditto the idiotic 20 mph limits in Wales.
Speed limits should be standardised nationwide for the sake of safety.

I thought commercial vehicles (over a certain weight) were restricted to 50 on national speed limit roads and 60 on dual carriageway's UK wide? Never knew there was a difference in scotchland, even though nobody seems to adhere to any of them. Note that most double cab pick up trucks are now in that category except Isuzu d-max and mitsubishi L200 
small car derived panel vans are still cars in terms of soeed limits so your mate should be able to contest the ticket. One of my mates got stopped in a vw transporter (lwb high top so deffo commercial) and played dumb to the lower limit and got let off

Maybe it's just Dumfrieshire which is where he got done. Either way it goes to show the confusion caused when politicians started playing around. And yes, pickups are now classed as vans for tax purposes. Are they also for speed limits? I don't know.
All I do know is if they do bring this 50 limit in you can guarantee speed cameras will spring up all along the border. Obviously there's no hard border between England and Scotland and while there's plenty of "Welcome to Scotland" / "Welcome to England" signs on the major roads, on a lot of back roads the border isn't signed at all.
If you're riding/ driving around Northumberland/Roxburghshire Cumbria/Dumfrieshire - which is very popular biking country - you often don't know whether you're in England or Scotland. A potential goldmine for the Scottish government (not that Scottish people will ever see any of the revenue, of course..).
Pick ups are commercial for speed limits and cars for company car tax levels - ftom April, go figure

Apparently not. But some forces/local authorities in Scotland appear to be making up their own rules on the hoof.
Dumbing down of the police has been happening since their high point of Constable Savage in not the nine o'clock news......
