Test ridden S4RS monster - and it is too

Thanks to Sean and everyone up at Ducati manchester while i was up there this weekend keeping a keen eye on the 1969 350 and the later 250 Mk3 we lent them for this weekends classic show, i took the liberty of trying the monster RS they had on demo. Never really been a fan of the monster in the past, but it was starting to make more and more sense after losing interest in modern plastic superbikes and finding more fun in the little 400's and other import raritys.
Anyway what can i say, i knew it was going to be a lively bugger, but this is just something else. The sound while ticking over from its termi's was fantastic, and i was looking forward to trying it. Being used to an early example of a 916 i found the monster comfy from the off and very easy to live with. pulling away was a breeze and the whole bike felt very smooth and gentle. this sadly was rather shortlived as riding it around taking the time to get used to it for a few miles i found it had quite a bark when provoked. the brakes were rather keen after the old 916 items (and around 27,000 miles of wear on pads and disks) but it was the front end that i felt was the most different. Handling was pretty positive, i think the pilot powers fitted were making the front feel a bit skittish but overall it went were you pointed it and only needed a bit of pulling it back into line when running wide on the power.
Braking as said was good, comfort was great when not giving it any stick, but that motor - well its brutal. Overtaking is easy yet frought with lots of danger too as the bugger tries to point skywards at any opportunity. Now i aint no wheelie merchant but this thing was coming up in third when the power started to kick at 4k with ease unless you were leaning over the front. The 916 was a bit like this in second but on the monster its doing it at 70 and not 30mph.
I am greatfull to Ducati Manchester for allowing me to try this, sadly it cements my thoughts on 100bhp being enough for me on the roads. The bikes limits were way beyond mine. I have been known for slating my new CBR600RR5 for being bland and dull without being able to pull you out of bed, yet being fast up top, well thanks but no thanks. its a cracking bike but i was buggered after only 25 miles tops. arms are aching and even trying to ride normally it seemed to egg you on to go faster.
I will stick with the old plodder of the 916, its plenty fast enough for me and sounds just as good, its just a shame its not as silky smooth as the monster from the engine, i have to say that stretta is a seriously smooth motor and if mechanicaly sympathetic like me, i would have no fear giving that later motor serious beans unlike the older engines.
Thanks once again chaps.

nice 1 ! i love the monster s4rs, never had a go of 1 but would love a go.

i spose its just what ure used to.

Ive had my s4r now for 3 years and it makes perfect sense on UK roads (the more twisty the better), its more than capable of holding its own with sports bikes and a lot more comfy.
My previous bike was a new CBR 600rr which lasted 5 weeks before i got rid as although it was a good bike it had no soul and after an hour in the saddle was a killer on the wrists ! As soon as I turned the ignition on the S4r I was sold and took a £1500 loss on the CBR but have never looked back.
Another plus is the lack of a fairing helps in keeping the points off the licence!:D

holding its own - it should nail em all. i too have a 600RR5 and its is pap in the midrange but uptop it sure is quick. as a road bike its rubbish. the older CBR was a better bike TBH.
Still prefer the more mannered and predicatable 916 for my lack of skill and urge to point skyward at every gear change

I know what you mean about "up top" speed on the CBR !! It is a great bike but too track focussed and as I have already said a bike that could get you unwanted points !!!

I rode the bike in the summer and it certainly earns its name, scary Monster that thing. The chap that bought it was off the fast stuff and bought that to slow him down !!!!!!!!

Was nice to see you, thanks for the loan of the bikes it was amazing to get them all there.

No worries martyn, had a few heart stopping moments with people swinging helmets around and banging into stuff by accident, i would have kittens watching people in that showroom all the time. Difference is that the blue 250 was worth around 5.5k and the red ultra rare 350 is worth around 9.5k. granted its not as much as some as the new stuff, but you cant get parts for these old uns. that 350 tank was battered like you wouldnt believe when i first saw it. to get it into that condition and the paint in just stunning.
It was good to see a few people who knew the bikes and appreciated them for what they were instead of the herd stood gawping at the stunning 1098's

Sean on the other hand found it amusing watching me get off the S4RS and get back onto the little KSR80, only to watch the rear step out when pulling off. not bad for a little 80cc 2 stroke gag bike eh ?

Lol sadly it was more to do with the tyres being rock hard after 2 years being an indoor ornament. they seem to grip ok on carpet though :D

Rode a DUK S4RS at cadwell last year, a real hoot and felt so easy to ride to ride after the 998.

Very lively but there agian it should be with the gearing its on.

Don't think it would replace the 998 as an ICBM but great for summer day hooning around.

Ray.
