Tig welding course plus

Started my twelve week night class on TIG welding at Motherwell college last night. Really looking forward to getting hands on next week. Could have been last night after short video but college omitted to inform participants that fire retardant overall and safety shoes not provided by college. After decades of academic qualifications etc really looking forward to my first real passion of hands own practical work - even get an SVQ which will probably value over all my masters degrees. You pick a preferred technique and I have chosen TIG after discussion with mates that weld and others that manage fabricators and mechanical engineers. Looks the most rewarding as difficult to master the technique however I like a challenge. First impression of workshop and facilities look good. Informed you can use some other tooling in the workshop so hoping to manufacture a fancy front wheel clamp for my newly acquired second hand electro hydraulic probike motorcycle work bench. Fancy in that I’m going to motorise my clamp actuated by a wireless keypad. In addition, wire in parallel with control pendant allowing wireless up down control. Ordered a four channel wireless transmitter / receiver momentary push switch unit from China all for £22 - amazing. You need to supply 12v dc but have lots of designs for that.

I hope you looked in to the health side things Geoff, you don't see many old Welders these days, not that I'm saying your old, I got out of the game years ago

Geoff what language is that you speak Englishtronic ? ;)

Have fun, and remember, my offer still stands if you want that TIG welder thingy that's in my garage ?

Hi Brian
Will keep in mind. Now on my fourth night class and it’s great. Now working with filler rod - sometimes good and sometimes crap. Will persevere and have registered for the next twelve week course starting in March. Have taken delivery of my ramp and completely re-wired with the additional rf receiver/transmitter wired in parallel with the standard wired switch pendant. Additional wires now run to my automated motor driven wheel clamp which has been designed and drawings sent to several water jet companies for quotes and leadtimes. Now have all the other parts i.e flanged linear bearings with hardened linear rods for almost friction free movement. Pick up the ballscrew and geared dc motor on Monday which will drive the central clamp. Hopefully my new found welding talents will allow me to weld the outer structures for my clamp. See pic of design.
