Treated the Darmah...

I thought i had a pair of plugs in stock but they've been eaten by the shed monster, so have just ordered some..

the float bowls are full but must admit the plugs didnt really seem that wet when i pulled them out considering i'd been turning it over with the chokes on... stupid really I should've got the thing running before the wiring was done, at least then i'd have a clue if this is a new fault or not..

yep i thought that too, but not even tryign to fire so as it has spark then i guess its missing fuel... I'll have a look at the carbs tomorrow if i get a chance... although it should start without the accelerator pumps ?? although I guess not if the chokes/enrichers arent working?

Yes, mine can be a right bar steward, kicking back like a politician being caught with his hand in the till.

Might be worth whipping off the float bowls & turning on the fuel to make sure the flood that precedes the fire is occurring; I'd be surprised if both cylinders were being recalcitrant. Would give you a chance to give them a quick clean in any case.

quick 5 minute look before work... carb throats are bone dry despite operating the throttle so pumpers arent pumping... operating the 'choke' lever results in just one side 'clicking' so at least one side has a working enricher... think i'll pull the carbs off and have a look inside as although i drainned them when i parked the bike, i guess things can still grow in there! bloke down the road has an ultrasonic cleaner so may pop and see him...

VP.. yep the float bowls were full and i can see fuel flowing through the lines... and i now understand your earlier about priming the carbs (pumpers) :o

If its spinning over and you put your hand over the carb it should suck great gobs of fuel since all the vacuum is going through the jets. :) If that does not do it then next step is a compression test. as no fuel lift =no vacuum =no compression.

top tip Paddy :) had another 5 mins spare today beofr ewe went out, spun it over with my hand over the rear carb and fuel flowed :) it then started - but only briefly as it was revving its bits off.. it also wouldnt start again unless i went through the hand over the carb routine so i presume this means theres some sort of blockage ?? not sure what the all the revving was about either... hmmm

Its reving because of the amount of fuel it sucked up when you put your hand over the back, its like putting the choke on but x10
Sounds to me like you have blocked primary jets so a carb strip is your best bet, take the float bowls off and remove the brass jets, large and small, take the air screws out and check them as well. If your mate has an ultrasonic cleaner then thats probably the way to go.

Hi Neil,
I had good results from soda blasting and ultrasonic cleaning at http://www.carbcleaning.com/ in Guildford. The guy there Chris combines carb cleaning with fixing lawnmowers (it works for him...).
I stripped my carbs down and he returned them cleaned for I think around £80. Dellorto do a gasket and seals kit which relieves you of another dollop, but at least you start with something that gives you a chance of working.

took mine to buts today and dropped them off at the bloke with the ultrasonic bath down the road.. :) the rear carb didnt look too bad inside I think its had some new bits, the front one was quite grotty...

in a fit of enthusiasm I had a go at bleeding the rear brake... and failed miserably so far!!!! I also started cleaning up the mess it returned in from the wiring.. i thought it was just a bit rubby from where it was trailered over there, but must've gone through some right shite as the polished bits are all marked.. first round f polishing has bought most of it back, just a bit p'd off i had too really..

ouch indeed, although thats mild to what i said!!!

carb is back from the cleaning tank so time to order up some bits... checked the jetting whilst i had it in bits... stock for early Darmah/late 860 apart from the rear pilot being 62 and a 60 in the front.. big difference is with the mains as it has 145 vs standard 122... i guess its been made richer to account for the contis and no air filters... i'll put it back as i found it for now and see how it runs (ever the optimist!) ..

yep one on order :) it was pretty tight comming out so so maybe had a hairline crack as it had only just seated when it snapped... the one in the other carb looked almost new so not an uncommon thing i guess :)

well, it runs (after a fashion :) ).. no smoke or nasty noises, although being more used to Guzzis and Hinckley Triumphs i'm never sure how much noise engines should make :) the pumpers dont seem to be pumping and i need to try and get it ticking over properly... cant find the T-piece for my remote fuel tank so the tweeking will have to wait till ive sorted that as it will make access a bit easier...

in the float bowl on the other side from the choke jet is the similar looking pick up jet for the pump. That should have a one way valve in it, unscrew and suck blow and see if its working. You will beat this Darmah into submission in the end :)

rear brake bled... though i'd try the fronts.. was going ok but am now getting black fluid in the resevoir... i'm assuming a seal is breaking up, probably 'operator error' as the lever isnt pulling smoothly so i'm guessing the something is cocked in the mastercylinder..

sigh... :(

how bizzare.... fluid now appears to be staying clear... the lever issue looks like it may well've been a lever issue... a little bit of work with a file seems to have smoothed things out... have now left the lever tied back to the bars to see if that clears the final air bubbles from the system overnight.. (when did i become an optimist ??? :) )

Have you changed from traditional to synthetic? It does look a bit like dark rum.

I was really stuck with bleeding my front brakes - I couldn't get the sponginess out of them. A consultation with Dr Paddy did the trick. His advice was to take off the splitter from the bottom yoke and keep agitating it as that's where the air collects. Leave the lever tied back overnight to let the bubbles come up. Worked an absolute treat!

it lives !! :) here i am just back from a couple of laps of the village...

nothing fell off, no kittens were harmed despite my lack of jacket and gloves (although the contis did wake up a cat and a couple of pensioners :) ) rear brake isnt great, fronts ok but need bedding in, sounds great, picks up well but think it needs the carbs tweeking as slightly fluffy on a steady throttle.. having said that only did 3 miles, so best i book an MOT for it and have a longer run.. did i mention it sounds great?
