i started my tt2 project last september , after building it at least a million times in my head
i fist saw them back in the 80s ,and found them drop georgeous from the frist time
then i saw an advert by Moto Vechia in 84 (it still hangs on my wall in the workshop)when they advertised for a rolling chassis using a std panth engine etc
But it was only when i crashed my 92 900ss (in Scotland of all places )last year, i realised i could rebuild the bike or make it into somthing special i had Always wanted
I had a spare frame anyway lying around so .................View attachment 10179

i cut the bent frame (tubes A B and C , also cut the topframe rail with 4 cuts to be able to bent it
this gave me the go ahead as i saw it could be done

next step was to make a jig as a areplacement to the engine. the jig was made in angled iron to pevent twisting/torsion
next i cut one side of the frame at a time , replacing the tubes cut away
i made inserts as to connect the 2 tube-ends , the inserts went 1,5 inch inside each side

the top tube-replacement tube , nearest to the headstock was no problem but the connection under the seat was , as the insert was first chased inside the Original , remaining , tube and once the new tube was lined up ,the insert was driven into the new tube from the rear .This was accesible because the origanal frame was a bit shortened

when i offered the engine up ; all seemed to be well , but yhis was an empty engine ,so no camshaft-pulley nor camshaft bearing block.
But when with these items it was offered, it seemed the top tubes were to narrow
after much headscraping i realised i had been looking at Original tt2 600cc pics , and an 900ss is a bit higher ,so it touched the top tube

so i turned up a 3cm dia cup,drilled it exentric (the mounting hole for the engine so that the camshaft pulley with belt just cleared the frame
this gave me an advantage as i found a std 900ss had not enough weight on its nose and i had been planning to fit a longer shock to the std bike
with the new cup/tube welded in place it jacked up the rear by 2.5 cm , giving me enough clearance for the beltpulley
the bearing block was put in the lathe and then turned down until it was slim enough the fit between the frame .this gave a hole wich has to be closed with another alloy plug

tube used was seamless tube ,intended for hydaulic use , dia 25mm
i used this after a long chat with Dave Molineux , of sidecar fame

ps do not know where the caption comes from or how it got there under my alias 'where is the kickstart! but i like it ,

As an ex-owner of a very trick Pantah and liker of the TT2, I am going to like this thread.

Never had a Pantah or a TT2 but I'll interested to see how this goes. Good taste in beer you've got too :thumbs:
 
Hi anouther interested party here,
I built a paso engined on last winter, not problem free!
But love the bike and at 160kg with lights etc goes well.
 
My old one looked like this
- no stand as ex-Manx 500 racer, when out and parking always looking for lampost to prop it against!
- nice bits inside engine and suspension with silly f/g bodywork

Good work, keep an eye on the heastock that it has not pulled when the top tubes were welded in, a contracting weld has a lot of force as I found out the hard way. :eek:

hallo Sam ,took a while to start the thread but better late than never

thanks for the advice but i did not weld onto the headstock , but cut the toptubes after the first bend, and so kept the triangulation preventing bending forces
when i build the outfit we reamed the headstock last when everything was welded and indeed were very surprised how much it had moved , although we did make a jig trying to prevent this.But here i only did one side at the time so i hope i prevented any deformation
still only time will tell if it has moved,and if so then rereaming in line and oversize bearings are in order

so i neede a swinging arm , and the Original alloy one looks too modern to me and is a route too easy (two wheel classics use this )
so i dug out a pantah swinging arm , cut it in half and widdened it
i first made a jig to locate the 2 halves , turned up the spacers for the rear wheel (bevel-style) ,turned spacers for the engine-swingarm spindle and clanped everything up so it would not move during welding
you need to turn spacers for the engine-swingarm spindle as the pantah spindle is narrower and thickerView attachment 10191

as one can see i cut the arm in the middle but cut the gusset back an inch or more because i did not want all welding to be done in one line
the spacer wich sits between the 2 halves is spigotted in both halves
i next added the gusset
 
next i bent two tubes over 35 degrees and welded them to the swingarm ,MIG

you can see the mounting point for the shock is to the left and in line with the small tube forming the connection for both arms forming the cantilever
i saw this way of fixing the shock on a bike built by Tony Foales and liked the idea
perhaps a little more complex than welding 2 tabs on but i liked it
the shock is made to measure so i could make it as short as i wanted to (or at least that is what i thought , wrongly)
the lenght of the shock was indeed a problem and i found only 2 firms wanted to build one ,at reasonable time and cost.(must have scot ancestors as i try to make eveything myself or as reasonable as possible

I did a similar mod to my Pantah swing arm (this is the scary bit) 30 yrs ago but still using the original Pantah frame.



I have managed to pick up an Alloy swing arm that fits the pantah motor.
