North Yorkshire police are holding a Bike Safe event in Thirsk on Saturday, June 24, and everyone is welcome.

We just want to have an informal chat with any fellow rider who wants to drop by and talk about better, safer riding." said Sergeant Pete Mason. "We are police officers, not trainers, but as experienced and highly-trained motorcyclists we are well qualified to give vaulable advice and tips."

Vistors will also be told about a series of skills workshops aimed at bridging the gap between basic skills and further training, based at Thirsk and costing £50. Classroom workshops are followed up by advanced rides and can be booked online. Click here. (external site)

The Thirsk event takes place at Teasdale Motorcycles, Long Street, between 10am-4pm. Shark helmets and Dunlop Tyres will have displays, there's a Hog Roast with proceeds going to the air ambulance, and Bike Safe will also be displaying two new machines, with a Honda SP-2 and a Yamaha R1 loaned by generous sponsors.
 
why are these things always on Saturdays when I'm working or competing in the best 24hour race in the country? Oh and the added benefit for them that they can still get out on Sunday and nick you! :(
 
I wouldn't mind a critical eye on my riding. Is it possible if I turn up. Will they be looking at cans or will they turn a blind eye since they are not a safety issue, which seems to be the aim of the day.

I went on this course last summer. Pete Mason is excellant. They are not looking at cans, but they do ask you to turn up on a road legal bike. The rideout on Saturday is along the yorkshire TT course is Helmsley to stokesley. I have been riding for 27 years and still learned alot, especially safe road positioning. Well recomended for safer riding.,
 
Can't speak for other forces but Northern Constabulary fund the costs of the scheme but officers taking part seem to do so in their own time unpaid. There was a big questionmark over whether the Chief Constable would fund it past 2006 and to date I haven't heard the decision. Seems each force places varying importance on the value of the scheme. As far as the police "instructors" are concerned here, they are not after small number plates, dark visors and noisy cans. Their view is they want to save lives. At the end of the day they ride motorcycles as a job as well as a hobby.

i added myself to the list beginning of 06 but havnt heard anything back yet, i think theres a massive list of folks wanting to do it.

:rolleyes: It will be one of the victims of cost-cutting of our council police budgets, usual short-sighted way of tackling problems. :rolleyes:
