You’ve both reminded me of something. A couple of years back daughter no.1 texted me to say she’d just received a £1200 electricity bill and how could that be? The insinuation was it was all my fault as the previous spring when I redecorated the flat for her I fixed the extractor fan in the bathroom (to cure her complaint of the bathroom always being damp and mildew growing) and fixed the extractor fan in the kitchen, complete with its humidity sensitive switch, (again to cure the damp & condensation issues) and that with these things running it must be that which has jacked up her electricity bill

.
I explained this simply could not be the case and that she should go back through all her bills over the last couple of years and check the readings etc and make sure they hadn’t made a mistake. I asked who was the supplier, expecting London Electric or British Gas to be the answer, she informed me it was Bulb - I’d never heard of them.
She duly checks and when we next speak she and I go through it, the per unit cost and standing charges are about right and it transpires the bill is correct.
So, what the hell is occurring here then

.
After much conversation it transpires she and her partner have selected their electricity provider on the basis of which ever one offered the lowest monthly payment, which turned out to be Bulb. She had no idea, from her reading of the sales blurb, that if the provider said a typical 2 bedroom flat costs X that she would pay anything other than X, this she (and he) shopped around for the lowest monthly DD. I had to explain to her that electricity is charged on a per unit basis, that the ‘unit’ is a world wide standard, and that everyone gets charged an amount per unit plus a standing charge just to pipe the electricity in, both of which vary from company to company and that it’s those costs she should focus on.
Her bill was a catch up bill after a year or more.
Now she’s not stupid so if she got taken in like this, with an eye catching low monthly payment just as Aircon’s been offered, how many others have been? Is this another disaster about to explode as all these middlemen go bust? Is that why the Govt is having to step in as massive amounts of money owed by consumers is handed from the bust supplier(s) to those that remain?
