What the situation is now post Brexit-in-name-only I don't know, but our waters used to be full of European sand eel trawlers which dragged the sea bed utterly destroying miles of sea grass meadows which were nurseries for numerous species and a rich resource for our inshore fishing fleet. The sand eels went to Europe to be ground up to make fish meal feed for the salmon farming industry.The lunacy of the united nations. Intensive salmon farming is one of the dirtiest and most environmentally destructive forms of aquaculture there is. The fish are heavily stocked and over fed. Fish waste and surplus feed dumps vast amounts of phosphorous and nitrogen onto the sea floor creating a lifeless dead zone and generates deoxygenating algal blooms in the water column. The farmed fish are riddled with parasites which spread diseases to wild stocks and they're pumped with medication and antibiotics which pollutes the sea.

Feeding sand eels to salmon isn't the problem. Sand eels are a natural prey species for wild salmon. It's the trawling process to catch them that's so destructive, plus the vast amount of energy and pollution generated in processing them into fish meal feed and the bio-pollution produced from the salmon farms themselves.
