Back in 1991 I had just bought a brand new 900ss. A good friend of mine was into racing and he persuaded me to have a go in the novice class at Cadwell.
We all followed the instructors around for a couple of laps and then off we went. After a few laps I`d sort of got the hang of it ( I hadn`t) and was convinced I was a track day god in the making ( I wasn`t) and there I was, throttle pinned wide open, bike leaning over at an impossible angle only to be easily overtaken on the outside by a bloke on a CX500 of all things.
I know my place now and am happy pottering along looking the bunnies in the fields .

Knowing 'there's always someone faster' is a good way of not over riding your skill / comfort level - otherwise your ego can outdo your skill very quickly.
