Electric Vehicle Stuff


Dropping my lad off yesterday, I'd reset the trip computer specifically to see the mpg as I haven't done that for a few years (4 years in fact...it did over 50mpg on a run back from Aviemore), and the 34 mile round trip across country on b roads it did 42mpg. From a reasonably heavy, 10 year old 2.2 turbo diesel Jag estate. I think that's pretty good. And probably far more efficient than all but the smallest EVs all things considered.

And then you see stuff like this that has lost lost 2/3rds of its cost over 3 years and 29k miles...might seem a cheap used buy, but looking at others, it'll lose another 50%+ over 2 years and 28k miles.

I still think bangernomics is the best option but Mrs Hell won't let me anymore 🤣

My recently written off lexus rx450h cost me £9k in March 2021 and returned £6k in April 2025 and regularly returned 40 mpg. Find an electric car that will cost £750 a year 🤣
 
But terraced streets don't have room for 1 car outside every house and parking is first come first served so a house with an electric car won't be able to get to their charge point - there's going to be murder in the streets 🪓 🤷‍♂️ and it doesn't help flats (which are the modern version of terraced houses) fekkin' idiots :ROFLMAO:

In all the new housing estates here where dog boxes are the norm your driveway could be 6 doors down with just a number on the kerb.... the fucktards have leads running everywhere now and I can't wait for the first big compensation claim after a fall 🙌

The regime's solution to that situation will be the erradication of private car ownership. If you want to go anywhere you hail a state-owned driverless hire car from a local hub and pay by the mile. They already want more of us to live in multi-occupancy buildings for supposedly for net-zero reasons (shove us all into Stalinist appartment blocks), but multi-occupancy also suits their anti-car agenda. No private driveway or private parking - no car: therefore force more people into such dwellings to justify restrictions on private transport.

Yesterday was Bastille Day in France...I hope generations to come will be enjoying a holiday for Westminster Day.
 
About 20 years ago when the company was extending into the building next door, we built 8 apartments within the grounds of the new building. Each apartment had to have at least 1 parking space - that was a requirement for all new builds.

Now, the council want to sell one of teh car parks in town for building about 28 units...with something like 6 parking spots.

That only makes sense when you realise what you've written (about the 15 minute cities).

The Mayor's new congestion charge for electric vans is a penalty for going green​





Under the current proposals, small businesses and charities that have switched to electric face a new £9 daily charge. That’s more than £3,000 a year, per vehicle. It’s not just counterproductive - it’s a penalty for going green. Worse, some small business owners have already told us they are switching back to diesel.
 
I carry out lots of fire risk assessments for landlords/care homes and supported living houses in multiple occupation.

I always tell them not to allow residents to charge lithium batteries inside such accommodation and to keep the batteries outside in a well ventilated container.

Parking electric vehicles in underground car parks beneath blocks of offices/flats is another issue and I'd expect FRAs to look at automatic fire suppression in such areas to reduce risk.

Are lithium ion power tools as dangerous? I and every tradie I know own loads and have done for many years, personally I've never seen or heard of a fire linked to them... don't get me wrong, I'm proper anti battery powered vehicles but just interested in what you have seen/know re battery power tools. I have them in the car, house and garage.. obviously they are smaller than those required to power a vehicle but do they pose the same fire risk ?

I don't deal with Trades Chiz, but, overcharging the batteries seems to be a major problem.

The electric bike/scooter brigade are not necessarily the most safety conscious and will use after-market chargers not suited to their particular appliance. That combined with sticking it on charge and going to bed can lead to problems

This is the advice given by the Fire & Rescue Service:

Causes of battery fires​

  • Rapid overheating (a process called thermal runaway) leading to fire or explosion.
  • Overcharging – if you charge too long or with too much voltage, it can cause overheating and fires.
  • Damaged batteries - may release flammable electrolytes, increasing the risk of fire.
  • Exposure to high temperatures – high temperatures speed up battery ageing and increase the chance of battery failure.

Our safety advice​

  • Charge your devices and equipment during the day, instead of at night while you're sleeping, and ensure they're charged away from from escape routes.
  • Unplug after charging and use manufacturer-approved chargers.
  • Avoid charging on soft, flammable surfaces, like bedding.
  • If a battery shows signs of overheating, swelling or other forms of damage do not use the battery. Dispose of it appropriately and report the defect to the manufacturer.
  • Always seek professional guidance when converting a bike or scooter into an e-bike or e-scooter.
  • Only purchase your device and charging equipment from a trusted seller and check product reviews.
  • Recycle your electrical items with care. See the information on the Recycle Your Electricals website to find your nearest recycling centre
