Pet's Corner

Losing a pet after such a long time of caring, feeding, exercising and loving is a bereavement equal to losing a child.

No words can improve your desolation, and time alone will eventually start to heal

We've lost five over the past 45 years (mainly rescue dogs of indeterminable age)., and we miss every one of them.

They live such short lives and it's not fair.

I wonder what the other dogs 'think' about losing their friend.

The GSD has never really been an attention seeker but wants to sit with one us now and keeps looking at me with a look that seems to say 'when is he coming back'.

The Dane has always wanted attention, but seems to be sulking.

When I feed them they both go and look round the rest of the house now before eating.

Aye, it'll be the pack mentality, he was part of the pack and now is gone, don't know about if dogs feel empathy in their own way but they'll know one of them is missing

Duke & Sox were my first dogs as an adult. Duke was Doberman/Labrador mix and Sox a very large Border Collie who was dumped as apparently no good at sheeping on the farm. He went blind at the age of 6, quite common in Collies apparently , and from then on he relied heavily on Duke for guidance. He did his best to make sure he was always in physical contact with Duke in the house and shoulder to shoulder on walkies. Duke was a few years older and inevitably died first, Sox seemed bereft at not only losing his buddy but also his guide dog. It took about a month for him to get over the loss and during that time I did my best to make sure he was barely alone so he came to work with me most days and I stayed in at night.

This is Ethan, we think he is about 18. He may be waiting for a zebra or wildebeest to wander in to his kill zone, he may be having a quiet moment contemplating the meaning of life but i suspect that at his age he has forgotten why he went out and is having a rest before returning.
