We'd been planning to get a third budgie when disaster had struck our happy family. Mr Hibs fell very ill and it was touch and go if he'd survive. To date, we are still unsure what had befallen our beloved boy - illness, kidney disorder, injury, something else? Whatever it was, it was fast. It always is with birds.

Long story short, Mr Hibs is on the mend but he may or may not get 100% function again in his legs, particularly his right. He has made incredible progress though since the night the emergency vet offered to put him to sleep. He flies, sings, attempts to bully Eeyore (unsuccessfully now, the balance of power has shifted, alas for Hibs) and is in most ways his old self. You would not believe how emotional a grown man can get over a feathered friend - I certainly was taken aback by the strength of my reaction to his illness.

We went to our favorite pet store yesterday to see if there was a budgie to add to our flock and there was. A truly beautiful, opaline boy who had a gleam in his eye and a way about him. We were utterly charmed ... and then devastated. A little girl had already set her heart on this handsome lad and although we were next up for service and could have swooped in, we just couldn't do it. It was close though. I was sorely tempted to tell the nice little girl and her nice Mom "Shit happens, dry your eye Princess, my budgie, bitches". Sorely tempted.

Panic not! Another avian began to woo us, fluttering her eyelashes and showing off for our benefit. Only problem - she's not a budgie, she's a kakariki. A near relative of chizel. (Kaka is maori for "parrot", riki means "little" and chizel means "squirt".

We had been thinking of a cockatiel at some point but this girl won us over:

Her name is "Xanthe" which is Greek for Golden-haired. She is a charming little bird, busy and inquisitive. She is in a month's solitary for health reasons so we are using the time to get her human- and hand-tamed (no fuck-ups like with that Guinness Eeyore lol). I cannot wait to get her introduced to the Boys, who have yet to lay eyes on her.

Yes, I know. I have become parrot-obsessive.
