Just had my daily remapped from 204 to 245bhp although it could be 275 bhp as my mate had his done then dyno’ed it and his was 275..might try it one day but it’s def quicker in both ‘D’ and ‘S’. Just gone over 96k in 4 years so it’s run in now lol

Finally bit the bullet after much thought.
Decided to put a set of Stuttgart SF10 20" on the Expert.
Very happy with the result
One month of me driving that in town and it would be cattle trucked.
Speed bumps, parking against high kerbs not to mention the people in town who cannot drive.

Anyone else tempted to convert a large van, say fuck it and tour the world?
It will take over your life..... my bro has been at it for a year.
Join a group and read a lot before starting....
Start with a decent van Merc or VW or at a push a boxy Fiat.... but avoid courier owned and shit brands.... you know what vans are cheap n cheerful.
Think about where you are going to put it when you aren't out touring. Unless you've access to a farm or a compound you'll regret it.
Budget and stick to it.
I've seen plenty of £5K vans have 3 or 4 times as much spent on them.
Check out the resale values on your choice... you'll be surprised at the money.

You'll need someone secure to work at least two or three times bigger than the van.

Anyone listen to Aleks Kritofski today, her Digital Human episode on Novelty was fascinating and entirely relevant to this discussion.

Lockdown demonstrates that actually the internet, with answers to everything at our fingertips, is not the saviour experience we all expected, it’s all too contrived and organised.

It’s what the Google’s and Apples and Amazons think we want to see, whereas merely visiting a friend using say, public transport, exposes you to far more chaos, those newspaper headlines of the guy sat opposite you, buying a coffee, a chance encounter, the small but all so important human interactions en route.

We all need disruption in our lives. Get a van, travel the world

Tyres yesterday MOT today. Should sale through, last year in lockdown I did all the underside and inner wheel arches, red oxide and under seal underneath and red oxide and stone chip resistant paint where it was visible and added a sliding door window (with a jig saw!!) It’ll be Day van converted at some point, insulation is done, going to keep it basic but good enough for a few nights away. I bought it 2 years ago 1 owner from new 105k miles, cab is like a new van, well looked after full main dealer service history med wheelbase medium high roof Ford Transit so you can stand up in it, I also waited for the right chassis 3 tonne ( it’s a class 7 commercial MOT ) and 125 Bhp motor so you can overtake and cruise. But the amount of shite vans I looked at that were advertised as being good was a joke, be careful.... mine hadn’t been touched so you scold see all the marks on the paint and rust spots on the arches etc, which I preferred because I know that they have been done right, and the seller hasn’t hidden anything but it took a lot of finding, in the end I got a train to Perth, bought the van at Arnold Clarke for 6k and drove it back. It’s a real cracker.

You would need somewhere to park that in town as you can't park a class 7 on the street at night.
I don't know what happens when you convert and register as a camper van.

That is another dilemma.
Convert to Camper van and reregister.
Cheap(er) insurance?
Removing and adding seats and other notifiable changes to vehicle for insurance purposes.
No Camper parking restrictions, don't apply to VANs .... the list goes on.

i don’t see any of that being an issue, most research doing a van conversion before buying one, interiors are all available off the shelf if you want them too. Insurance and re-registering is now common, google is bursting with info so if you want to have a go I do it....

Sorry I didn't mean it to sound so negative.
Just loads of things to consider and plan.

When I retire proper I'm getting my Bro to convert my Sprinter into a "sleepover night, but still useful van".... a partial conversion.
I'll rent something proper when I want one.

That’s about my plan, I want to get the bike in as well as be able to sleep out for a few nights, despite my carpentry.... I’m buying the units in made to fit the van I can’t be arsed fiddling with all that... I’ll do the rest of the lining and additional battery first... failed the MOT😤 brake calliper leaking so it’s getting a new one

Don't forget the battery control module.... it charges one battery, then the other. Also prevents deep discharge.
Circa £50. It could prevent a fire, save your alternator and your batteries.

I worked with a guy who planned to get an old post office shitter van and do it out with space for a MX bike and 2 bunks to travel, reasoning for the shitter van was security, nobody's going to steal of break into that 🤣

A plumber I know has fitted (glued) glass on the outside of his works van and a few other bits to make it look like a camper van.
Parks in Slough and it appears to have them fooled at the moment.
