What have you done on your bike today?

This all sounds very like my Streetfighter. Came back from a service firing up on the button. Sat for a while on the charger. Fired it up one time took it for a short ride. Went to start it again when I came back before putting it away and a whirr and then nothing. Battery said fully charged according to the optimiser. Tried again and not even a click. Piggy-backed a second battery and eventually it started but only with extreme reluctantance. I can only conclude that the battery was weakened by being left off-charge at the workshop where it was serviced as there was a few weeks wait after it was done before I could pick it up, and when I did ride it, I didn't ride it far enough to fully charge it after stressing the battery by turning it over. A couple of lazy starting attempts later and the starter sprag was knackered. Doubling up the cranking power threw the sprag hard enough to get it to bite, but it was still slipping resulting in a very weak-sounding turn-over.
I can't see how any mechanical failure can occur from it just sitting there, except battery failure, leading to sprag failure. Possibly there's a dirty earth but I would have thought either you have a connection or you do not and it'll either start or it won't.

Looks like my Speedie TFT screen has given up. Common defect apparently. That will be £1200 +vat sir. I have found a company who say they can repair it for £500. Not happy 😡

Swiss, I think Triumph are responsible for the failing unit, although the bike's warranty may have expired it's still covered by the consumer rights act 2015, especially the instrument cluster as its a safety feature that need to display an accurate vehicle speed, Triumph should have at least one attempt at repair if unsuccessful a replacement should be provided, if the cluster is unable to indicate an accurate speed the vehicle is unroadworthy therefore not fit for purpose, all motorcycles produced for retail sale in the UK must have a functioning speedo, which should at least last the expected lifetime of said vehicle.
Go back to Triumph with a copy of CRA 2015 in hand. I fecking would!

I will look into that Bob; thank you.

Trailer it to a long hill and try bump start it, just to rule out the starter system draining all the power. My Multi got to the point that it would only bumpstart because the starter was sucking all the current.
@Hugo Magnus rather then try and bump start it simply connect a multimeter across the battery terminals, preferably an MM that can capture the max & min ranges it measures for review afterwards. Dont have the battery charger attached at the same time. Check the min V recorded. It may be the V drops so low that whilst the starter still turns there’s not enough power in the battery to also sufficiently charge the coils.

Whilst you may have a spark when there’s no compression ie when testing the spark plug outside the engine, there may be no spark when there is compression. A greater voltage is required to generate the spark under compression.

The ‘oily’ plug is perhaps an indication of fuel getting to it but not being combusted.

If the voltage of the battery remains >10.5 your battery is fine. If the voltage falls <10 it’s on the way out. If it’s below 9 it won’t be giving the coils sufficient voltage to do their job.

If the battery passes its test then it’s a case of having to connect the bike to something such as OBDStar iScan for Ducati and checking what’s going on electronically.

@West Cork Paul Well that worked! I had 13V in the bank, I set the meter to record minimum, pressed the button and the cantankerous effin' thing fired up. Hallelujah!

Just for the record the minimum was 11.4 V.

I guess the fresh petrol I put in there finally found its way to the combustion chamber but that doesn't answer why it wouldn't start with ether sprayed up its air intake. One of life's little mysteries. The temp today is 6 degrees thus a bit warmer than the last few days.

I am now putting a lot of the cowling back on. This afternoon my new Abba Skylift arrives and with that installed I'll take the leaky fork leg off and replace it with a Bumpkin one.

Modern motorcycle engines are entirely based upon quantum mechanics.
The act of measuring something alters its state, thus a non-firing ignition system flips to a firing one when you attach a measuring device to it.

This is known in technical circles as the "Start-You-Bastard" Principle.

Now I know the way forward with my S4R…

Changed the left fork leg, cleaned the front callipers, replaced the pads, fired it up and went for a ride. Blandford Forum High Street was still closed at the lower end as were several of the side roads around Milbourne St Andrew so explored the Dewlish and Cheselbourne road through Dole's Ash and Piddletrenthide.
The bike ran better than it has for a long time, even lifted the front wheel as I overtook a BMW.

I was believing you till you threw in all those made up names of places.. I understand you are bored bro but " dewlish" " cheselbourne"?
Ffs....

I felt the same when my son started riding, i bought him a 650 Bandit then he bought an MT-07 and i was worried about him. Luckily now he has a daughter he told me the other day that he is selling the bike and will be sticking with cars.
