What have you done on your bike today?

Took the Diavel to Ducati Sunderland this morning for its annual service and MOT. MOT had to be postponed because I'd taken the pillion pegs off and the "not for road use" bollocks on the Termi pipe was a stumbling block. But I'm reliably informed there is a simple work-around for that 👀 so it'll get Motted locally later in the week..

While I was waiting I took their V2 Hyper demo bike out for a spin.
I have to say I was extremely taken with it. Wonderfully willing, zesty engine with instant go everywhere. Didn't miss the desmodronics. It reminded me of my old KTM 990. Free-revving and urgent like a happy dog straining at the leash. Chassis was great. Featherlight and instantly flickable as you'd expect, but planted at the same time and not in any way nervous or flighty. Again, very, very reminiscent of the KTM 990 SMRs. Riding position was really comfortable. Loads of leg room, not at all cramped and not remotely intimidating. The seat wasn't nearly as bad as expected. Wider and flatter than the usual razorblade motard seats with plenty and stretching room fore and aft. I imagine it'd become a bit of a plank after a couple of hours but no worse than your average supernaked and I believe I could ride it all day with fuel breaks. How quickly they'd come round I'm not entirely sure as it didn't appear to have a fuel gauge or range indicator. But it's so light I imagine it would return decent economy and a usable range.

The throttle was a bit hesitant and boggy just off tickover when pulling away. Not jerky, just reluctant to pick up for a second off a closed throttle. It disappeared with more revs and clutch slip and on the go is was perfectly smooth. A couple of times waiting at junctions the tickover revs dropped too low and the engine stopped without me touching it. It was fine the rest of the time and restarted easily enough. It was a brand new bike that had only been ridden a couple of times so it might have settled down with use (TPS or something perhaps) and I did have it in Race mode throughout. Whether that was causing that slight wooliness off a closed throttle I don't know, but it was a minor detail. I think you'd get used to it and it wouldn't put me off.

Suspension was surprisingly plush. Not harsh at all, just taut and well connected. I was riding on semi-urban roads with a very smooth surface. I would love to have the thing for the day and take it over the nadgery Pennine roads where I live. It would be in its element there and the suspension would have been given a proper workout. I'm pretty sure it would cope well with the bumpy stuff without being kick-you-out-of-the-seat annoying. Brakes were brilliant. Felt much sharper than even the M50 Brembos on the Diavel, but that's probably down to the miniscule weight.

Would I buy one? You know, I actually might. I need to take one out for the whole day ideally. I think I could live with one as a do-it-all everyday bike. You do feel that you're not getting all that much physical bike for your 14 grand compared to the girth of the Diavel, but when a few nearly-new minters come onto the used market it could be a very attractive buy.
Anyone who likes the idea of the V2 Hyper but think it's just a one-trick pony, short trip fun bike should ride one. I think you'd be surprised how usable an all-rounder it could be.

I had a 950 Hyper for the day as a courtesy bike and enjoyed it…was a fun bike, but sounds like the V2 is a bit more than that.

The footpegs and MOT…is that because the rear seat is exposed? I don’t have pegs on mine but they’ve got seat cowls on.

Yep. If it's got a pillion seat it's supposed to have pillion pegs as well. Seat hump and no pillion, then pegs no problem. I haven't had pillion pegs on my KTM for the entire ten years I've owned it and that has a pillion seat and the issue has never come up at MOTs. But they did say that Vertu group MOTs are extremely strict. The "not for road use" thing is just a printed panel on one of the tail pipes. It's not etched into the metal and I'm told ( 👀 ) it often disappears with vigorous scrubbing at washing time. The sound level was perfectly acceptable, it's just that panel of text. If it ain't there, it doesn't matter. My exhaust needs a good clean anyway. I think some Scotchbright will bring it up a treat... 👀

Sounds great but im kinda happy still with my 1100 - i did see a shot of the v2 with the seat off and it looked scary as fuck...littered with various electronic boxes and massive wiring loom that went everywhere....its a bit of a double edged sword....new and fresh and all that comes with it....but if anything goes awry...youll be paying...i think the last time i was told Ducati Bristol are pimping their mechanics out at 130 an hour...

Edit - actually ill add to that....i booked the RSV4 in for a throttle body check (to a local guy who spanners for BSB teams on the side so he knows his stuff) - when i spoke to him on the phone and explained what i wanted he immediately said (ive not got the software for that job). Explained that mine was the PreArpc version (fuck all electronics) - to which he said... ah yeah, thats fine then... cost just shy of 130 quid - pretty sure if that was a half new bike id be into the thick end of 500..

I think that's true of most new bikes now, except cruisers and retros - and its creeping in with those as well. Not much you can do about it if you want a new bike.

I don't blame you for keeping the analogue 1100. I feel the same about my 1098 SF. The sales bloke said he owns a 900 SS that's had a spot of tweaking so it now makes 100 bhp and he loves the analogue simplicity of it. When I told him about my SF and the tuning it's had that would make it hard to sell, he said, but why would you want to sell it? They'll never make them like that again. And he's right.

I think I'd worry less about the electrickery on the Hyper than on something like a V4 Pani, Multi or SF. The Hyper is pretty simple in comparison, probably less on it than my five year old Diavel, and running costs are a lot less than a Desmo twin. No £1000 valve check services to pay for. The V2 is a proven unit by now so I don't think I'd have any reliability qualms.

On a side issue, I did tell the workshop that my bike had been custom mapped and I didn't want it changed. They said that's thanks for letting us know because when they plug it in to check for updates, if it detects any non-factory settings a "restore settings" box comes up before they can proceed with the update and if they clicked that it would have returned my map to factory.
It meant they couldn't load the update. Luckily it was only something to do with phone connectivity which I'll never use, but it's slightly worrying if Ducati software won't let you load updates without restring factory settings. Sounds like more anti-tampering measures by the back door.

Was yours that 1098 that was at Lougi's for years....?

Sometimes i think about something newer but then (and im not joking) i come to my senses...!

Put a gun to my head right now....a speed triple RX would be nice...but, ive got my z and its tailored perfectly to me....

Yep, that was my SF. Family life and circumstances intervened and it got mothballed. Got it back fully serviced and fixed a couple of years ago when I bought a house in Scotland. Rode it a few miles up the road for the first time in years and the sprag clutch let go..

Sold that house because of .. stuff. Moth-balled again in my lock-up awaiting now a lithium conversion because the stock lead-acid isn't man enough with the engine work I've had done. It'll be rolling again soon.

Put a battery on and stuff lit up 😮😮😮
