Project Superspurt

Well thats me down to three babies,Lindsay is now Superspurts new keeper...I feel its going to be taken on a few stages ;)

Calling all aeshetes... Paint / Colours

Am getting together prices for painting.

Imagine a red frame, white (pearlescent / metalflake) tank and bodywork consisting skinny 1/2 fairing and single seat unit. Seat unit will have satin black number boards with red (same as frame) pinstripe.

Should the 'Ducati' logo on the tank be red or satin black?

I'm leaning to red, matching the frame, but want to decide before getting the quotes. I know from experience at work that changing the spec between quote and order usually ends in disaster no matter how well you think you communicated the change.

Quotes will be;

'In house' - uncle Ally. Show winning classics (bikes and tractors )
Bike Paints - have always had perfect results / service. Not sure I can afford them for this scale of job though.
Jacksons - Have heard good things but no experience. Will go and see them though.

Anyone else East Coasty worth considering? One further attraction of Bike Paints is that they know their Ducati's so things like decals (tho they paint them, so not really decals..) and number boards are always spot on as far as size / shape / position.

I would go red. Simple usually works best.

Davieravie has a contact (Ray?) that does paint I think.

Pal had some bits done by Bike Paints and it is probably better than the factoty finish.

black tank decals to match rear number boards :flash: might be too much red /white goin on otherwise

The finish on Andys SPS is pretty special...Bike Paints

Colour scheme by committee. We've been here before.
Have fun Lindsay :D

LOL - not the whole scheme, that's decided all on my own. Just the tank logo, thats where I have run out of imagination!!! But I know what you mean. Very wary of getting in to one of these 'I have more money than sense, please help me spend it' threads that appear on other forums

Try Bob Falconer in Arbroath - cheaper than Bike Paints and easier to work with (in my experience) - and the quality of his work is excellent too.

Bob's airbrush work is very impressive but I didn't think he did 'straight' paint jobs. Saw him in Morrisons on Saturday too and never even thought to ask

Aye, he does straight stuff too - he was quite happy to quote for repainting my neighbour's Senna.

TXT from Langcourt "Your cylinders are ready....please call...." :D

I have heard that a few other parcels have arrived while I have been away, but fortunately they have not been opened and invoices scrutinised

First fit of the single seat looks good apart from around the tail light - some jiggery pokery / sanding / filling is going to be needed to get the gaps even. Not that it's bad, just not up to my exacting standards :p

Photo's will follow. Sometime.

Masking for vapour blasting of cylinder heads

Decided to blast the heads 'complete' rather than strip right down. Wee plates to block the inlet ant exhaust ports will be easy made and can be sealed with a smear of silicione and fastened using the stud holes.

But how to mask the oilways? Found these. I will see later if they take small orders or if they have distribution.

Also, 10mm ones will be useful for all these brake / clutch components that are rattling round in cardboard boxes.

Grounds for divorce....?

It's a braw wife that lets you away with capers like this :D Bit gutted though that the high temp paint that I was assured was semi gloss is absolutely b&stard flat matt

I have used PJ1 Satin and also gloss on my bike. I would say the gloss was a gloss.
I didn't want to put a whole engine in the oven  so used a heat gun to warm the motor and sprayed onto the warm metal and it cured almost instantly.

Mobile BBQ

Now that it's cured it looks even more like a bloody BBQ and is exactly the look I didn't want. I should have used PJ1 in the first place. Moral of the story is not to believe spotty laddies in Halfords.

Will put in a call to Harties to see if they have stock and I can nip along after work. Hope he has some as am keen to get done with all the horrible overspray.

Did you use 'normal' PJ1 or the 260 degree stuff? If you used the normal stuff, have you run up the engine yet and did it all blister

Have used 'normal' PJ1 - not blinding gloss, but shiny-ish. Just cured by running up engine - good coverage, smooth, no blisters.

Cheers - the local(ish) bike shop found their last can of the gloss PJ1 for casings (temp rating between 'normal' paint and exhaust paint) at the back of the shelf. I am going to collect after work.

Could be a while before the engine is run up, but I have been granted oven access again tonight as the smell was apparently 'not that bad'. The cat looked a bit shaky on his feet though :)

I recognise your handle from Ducatisti - do you think we will see more activity on here if it does close down? (hijacking my own thread )

Lindsay, I have spare cans in the garage and will have a look at temp ratings tonight and let you know.

Cheers Stewart, but am currently between coats.. Fast Black Gloss Black 500F (260C) Engine and Case Paint :D

260C is what I used and it fell off the first time I fired her up.

Nah, just joking...it's fine! :lol2:

Bocht eens

Ha - you nearly got me there, but if it didn't work I'm sure PJ1 wouldn't have the good name that it does. I have never seen more than 110C on the (oil) temp gauge, so going for a random 1.5x safety/fudge factor 160/170C stuff should be fine and 260C no bother.

One has (obviously?) been painted on top of the matt stuff, the other on bare metal. Left them in a warm room (Mrs Pict giving it laldy with the ironing) for a couple of hours then baked in the oven at 100C for two hours.

Looking like bocht eens;
